That (Other) Time I Took A Hamster To The Vet

A long time ago, when I was about nine or ten years old, I had a gigantic hamster named Caramel. He'd been a class pet, but we bonded so I got to take him home. Much like Jack, he had one eye - the other was some kinda messed-up raisiny looking thing. My mother worried about that, so we put him in a little container and took him to the vet we took ( Read more... )

Poor little guy. Weird how nobody would see hamsters though. I'd have thought hamsters would be quite a common animal to be taken to a vet.

small animal vets are a specialty. it's like finding a vet who can take a lizard or a ferret. most vets don't have experience or, really, know the fuck to do with a hamster. but some vets know 'em. i knew someone who took their goldfish to the vet a bunch of times. THAT took some searching.

Oh gosh the experiences at the exotic animal hospital. Our regular vet is a specialist in exotics -- does lots of birds and lizards and things. And then there is the Eastern Exotics now Pender Exotics, http://www.pendervet.com/pender-exotics-veterinary-centre.html. People drive from half way across the country to take their exotics here. The day after Thanksgiving a few years ago they admitted my rabbit. In the waiting room, I encountered a red tailed boa constrictor, a blue tongued skink, a chinchilla and a parrot. In the back, they were boarding all these birds over the holiday and it was like a ... talk like a pirate day? All these birds yacking at each and singing show tunes. Seriously. Absolutely surreal and so worth it to find someone who knows exotics as it appears your vet did. If you still have problems giving Jack his meds, give them a call and ask for options. They are really helpful over the phone ( ... )
