Coffee Hearts
Mikey had never been a ‘routines person’. Despite having his okay job in an average office block, working the clichéd nine-to-five and catching a train that never came early or late, he just couldn’t do it. His alarm went off early enough that he had plenty of time to get ready, and he left the house at what seemed to be the same time each day, so he really didn’t understand how he kept missing that 8:02 train every morning.
It was a sign of how unfocused Mikey’s mornings were that it took him three weeks to realise what, or rather who, was keeping him from making it to the station on time every morning.

The first day that Bob had walked into the café had been completely by accident. In fact, the only reason he had gone in there in the first place was to avoid a potentially awkward meeting with his ex-boss. Considering he had been fired for telling his boss to ‘shove his policies up his arse’ and then walking out, he figured that he could wait a while before running into that guy again. He walked through the door at an alarmingly fast rate and almost walked straight into another man, the other quickly stepping back to avoid tipping the coffee all over himself. There was mumbled apologies on both parts, and Bob watched him head out before he walked up to the counter and ordered himself a coffee.
This encounter probably wouldn’t have stuck in his mind normally; Bob had seen the guy for no longer than seven seconds. It was one of those moments that you forget almost instantly, maybe recounted it to someone at work if there was nothing better to talk about, but Bob remembered it simply because when he walked down the steps to the platform he caught his train from the man was standing there too. There was the customary ‘awkward glance’ of recognition, but neither made any attempt to start conversation.
They both just stood there on the platform, about ten feet from each other, sipping at their Gloria Jeans coffees while they waited for the train.

It took three days of them both visiting the café at exactly the same time for Mikey to realise that it was actually the same person that had almost caused him first degree burns. He picked up his coffee off of the counter and quickly stepped to the side for the other to get his own, looking at him for a second and considering saying something.
“Hey-“ A loud ringing from his back pocket cut the sentence short abruptly and Mikey just offered a slightly apologetic smile as he balanced his coffee awkwardly in the crook of his elbow, fishing his mobile out of his pocket with his free hand and walking out of the café as he answered it.
He couldn’t help but glance back into the café before he left for the train station.
He especially couldn’t help the slight smile that tugged the corners of his mouth when the other man stood closer to him that morning.

Almost a month of awkward hand bumps, not-so-secret glances and almost, but not quite conversation starters had passed, and despite seeing each other every morning, they still hadn’t spoken more than a few words to each other. Bob had learned that the man was called Mikey Way, that he was twenty-seven and worked as an executive advisor - Bob wasn’t really sure what that actually meant he did - at H.C. and Partners down in the city.
Bob liked talking to Mikey, a lot, and he liked looking at him. Not in the creepy way, or the sleazy way, he just liked watching him. The other man would do things like wrinkle his nose a little as he sipped his coffee, or tap his fingers against flat surfaces as he waited. Bob had no idea why, but he fascinated him. The only problem was, things kept interrupting these early-morning meetings every day. A phone call, one of their trains arriving, just generally being late - something always interrupted them.
One day Bob walked in to find Mikey looking seriously pissed off. He walked over, putting a hand on the other’s shoulder lightly, and couldn’t help but swallow a small laugh as Mikey jumped and huffed when he saw it was Bob, looking flustered. It was adorable, really.
“Why the long face, MikeyWay?” He asked, arms crossing over his chest then. Mikey just grit his teeth and threw a dirty look over at the barista, exhaling slowly.
“Twenty minutes, I’ve been here. I come in here the same time every day!” He muttered under his breath, scowling when the man put two coffees down on the counter, “Finally!”
Two coffees. Bob frowned and looked up at the guy behind the counter, who just shrugged a little and gestured towards them, looking at Bob meaningfully. It took a second, but finally he caught on and stepped in front of Mikey, picking them both up and handing one over to Mikey. He frowned at Bob for a second, raising an eyebrow at this seemingly random gesture and took the coffee. His fingers brushed Bob’s as he took it and Jesus, it was lame and sappy and not him at all, but he swore he saw a tiny smile on Mikey’s face. That simple little smile, as brief as it was, gave him goose bumps.
Mikey leant over to peer at Bob’s coffee too and the tiny smile grew wider, leaving Bob confused as Mikey just reached for his free hand and laced their fingers together. He looked down at his coffee and saw the heart, glanced at Mikey’s and saw the same thing.
As they left the café Bob turned around and smiled a thanks to the man, who just winked and waved him off, laughing quietly to himself as they made their way down the street.
