The Other Parts About a half hour walk from our campsite was the Wasteland Store. It had everything any camper would ever need, from smores kits to beach toys to those cute little popcorn popper things. Joining it was the Wasteland Restaurant, where all the lazy campers went when they didn’t feel like cooking their own food. That restaurant was where I sat currently, head resting on the table in front of me, eyes closed. I must have looked like I was sleeping, but really I was just basking in the air-conditioned atmosphere of the place.
Kaoru was sitting across from me, sunglasses resting upon his head as he went over our itinerary for the day. I’d made up with Kaoru after the whole Miyavi incident, figuring that ignoring him right now would be a dumb idea-he was our band leader, after all, and he had the power to make sure Miyavi never bothered me again.
Plus, I missed talking to him. He’d been my best friend for a long time, and he and I both knew all along that my I-can’t-hear-you charade wouldn’t last.
“There’s a boat race at two… you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to. We only need two of us to compete.” He mumbled, turning a page of the booklet in his hands.
“Die,” I said, yawning. “Toshiya, too. They’re the most athletic.”
Kaoru nodded. “I already signed them up. We can go down to watch that later on.”
I shifted my head and sighed, looking out of the window I was facing. I saw Kai, the drummer of Gazette sitting at a picnic table with someone from another band I didn’t recognize. Curiosity got the best of me. “Kaoru? Who’s competing from Gazette?”
Kaoru tapped his hand on the table a couple of times before finding it. “Aoi-san and Uruha-san.” He went back to our schedule and continued on as if I hadn’t even asked the question. “We have supper at six tonight. It’s up to you whether you want to eat in camp or come back here. Then Yoshiki’s invited us over to his campsite for some marshmallows and songs… you know, just to mellow out. None of this is stuff you need to do, so don’t worry.”
I shook my head and smiled. “Thanks, Kaoru. You make me sound like I’m a hermit or something.”
“You were certainly acting like one earlier.” He replied, shaking his head.
“Sorry, Dad.”
Kaoru laughed and stood up. “Well, we’ve got an hour to kill before the boat race. I’m going to buy some ice cream.” He left the table and I nodded, even if he couldn’t see it, placing my head back down again.
I closed my eyes for only a minute when I felt someone sit down next to me. Whoever it was cleared their throat. I sighed. “What?”
“I’m wondering,” said the person, “What it is that is keeping you from a relationship with my bassist?”
I sat up quickly and flinched, half expecting it to be Ruki and his awaiting fist. I breathed in a sigh of relief when I realized it was just Kai, who had apparently finished talking with his friend outside.
“I don’t see how that’s any of your business, Kai-san.” I replied, standing up and meaning to leave. He grabbed my arm and pulled me back down.
“I’m not trying to pry, and I promise anything you say won’t leave this restaurant. I just-” He paused as Kaoru sat down again, ice cream cone in hand. “Kaoru-san.” He greeted.
“Nice to see you here, Kai-san. Why are you here?” Kaoru asked, taking out his wallet to put his change in it. He gave me a pointed stare, as if knowing that I had something to do with it.
“He was just saying hi, Kaoru.” I answered before he could get the chance. “And now he’s leaving.”
Kai frowned. “Actually, I wasn’t. You’re the band leader, right?” He directed this question to Kaoru and I glared. At Kaoru’s nod he continued. “Are you aware of the situation between Kyo-san and my bassist, Reita?”
Kaoru looked confused, and I dropped my head on the table again. “No, what situation? There’s a situation?”
Kai nodded and spoke again. “Apparently prior to this Reita and Kyo-san went-”
“Oh for god’s sake just call me Kyo.”
“Reita and Kyo went out on a date, as I can best describe it.”
Kaoru’s jaw dropped and I laughed, trying to lighten the mood. “Yeah… Don’t be too surprised, Kaoru.”
His mouth fluttered open and closed for a moment before he finally spoke, his voice high. “You’re gay!? Why the fuck didn’t I know about this? You’re dating REITA! Kyo, you know relationships between the members of different bands can turn out horribly for both parties. Jesus-”
“Kaoru-san. I understand why you’re flustered, but I can promise you that the date didn’t get far. Apparently Kyo isn’t looking for a steady relationship, because he was, in Reita’s words, only looking for sex.”
Kaoru looked like he might die on the spot, so I reached over and patted him on the head. “There, there. It’s okay. Nothing happened, he turned me down.”
“In a sense, Kyo, you were the one to turn him down first. I’m not supposed to tell anybody this, but Reita’s hurt. He really likes you. He’s trying to be manly about it, but if you give it another try…”
“I don’t do romance. Relationships. I don’t. I’m sorry, Kai-san.” I said, standing up and moving away far enough so he couldn’t pull me back down. “If what you say is true and Reita is hurting, then I pity him. It takes a desperate person to find something likeable in me.” With that I turned around and exited the restaurant.

Ten minutes later found me entering the closest washroom I could find, hand raised to my forehead to keep the sweat out of my eyes. I stumbled towards the sinks and quickly turned the cold tap on one of them, filling my hands and splashing the water on my face.
I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair, looking in to the mirror. The entire place was covered in flies and dead bugs, I noticed, shivering. Flicking one aside to turn the tap off, I heard a loud scream coming from the showers.
“MOTH! MOTHMOTHMOTH OH MY GOD!” There was a crash and suddenly one of the shower doors opened and I watched, amused, as a man flung himself out, towel wrapped around his waist. He ran forwards and pushed himself out the door, leaving the bathroom silent once again.
I couldn’t help but start laughing as a tiny white moth fluttered out of the shower after him, it’s chase blocked by the now closed door.
“Isshi? Are you okay?” I heard a voice ask from the only other shower, and I froze, my laughter stopping instantly. “Isshi?”
“Shit.” I said, unsure of what to do.
“Who’s that?” The voice asked, and I panicked as the water shut off, leaving the bathroom even more quiet and much more frightening.
“Nobody!” I yelled, mentally slapping a hand to my forehead.
There was a minute of silence before the voice spoke up again. “Kyo-san?”
“No!” Why wasn’t I leaving? If he came out of there and saw me… if he came out of there in nothing but a towel… I stumbled over my thoughts and froze as the door opened slowly and a head peaked out.
I tripped as I turned around and ran in to the nearest bathroom stall, flinging it shut behind me.
“Kyo, don’t be an idiot, I know it’s you.” Footsteps. “Listen, can you come out actually? We should talk.”
“Reita.” I said, back pressing against the door to make sure it remained shut, and to firmly remind myself of the barrier between us which I must not cross. “Finish your shower and leave.”
“Kyo, please.”
“I’m sorry if you were hurt… by what I told you before. I really am. But it still stands. I am not starting anything with you if you’re expecting anything more than sex.”
A weight pressed against the door and my hands clenched. “So I can’t expect friendship then?”
I hesitated. “Friendship between us… right now… would be very awkward and strained.”
“It already is.” He countered, pushing slightly. “Can you at least come out of the bathroom? You’re being dumb.”
“I’m not-What gives you the right to call me dumb?”
“The fact that you’re hiding like a child inside a bathroom stall. I’m not going to attack you, Kyo, so come out.”
Oh god I might attack you, Reita.
“Not a good idea.” I said, shaking my head. I heard footsteps again and the squeaking of another bathroom door being opened. I hesitated. “What are you doing?”
I knew what he was doing, though, and I was unable to stop it. My little sister used to do it to me all the time when I was taking too long or if she just wanted to be annoying. If I opened the door at that moment, Reita would be able to block me, but if I didn’t open it, he’d just jump in from the other stall anyway. Or, if he was anything like my sister, he would grab my leg from underneath and pull himself in to my stall.
“Don’t!” I said, but it was too late. I tried to turn around and unlock the door, but soon he’d pressed his entire body weight on me and I face-planted against the door.
“Okay, so we can either keep doing this,” Reita said, panting as he regained his breath from the effort of climbing over the stall. “Or you can grow up.”
I wanted to be aroused so bad but the fact that I could barely breath prevented me from doing so. “Move, oh god move.” I hissed, managing to turn my head to the side to allow for more breathing space.
Reita shook his head and I shivered as pieces of his wet hair dragged along my neck. “Not until you give me some answers.”
“What the fuck do you want from me? I already told you everything back at my place!”
“Not about that!” Reita said, his voice getting louder. He took a breath and continued. “Why are you avoiding me here?”
“Why did you tell your bandmates everything!?”
Reita paused, unsure of how to respond. “Kyo, I… they’re my band… my family! You must have told your band too…”
“Only Die! And it’s not as if he’s treating you like a bitch is he? Your fucking family has been torturing the hell out of me the entire time we’ve been here!” I growled and shoved back, hoping to throw the bassist off balance. “In fact, since you want to know so badly, I just escaped from your drummer who also kindly told Kaoru. So now Kaoru’s going to be on my back, and for what? Because I hurt your feelings? Suck it up!”
As I was about to start pushing again Reita suddenly let go and I collided with his back, flinching as his arms held me steady. I shrugged him off and turned around, glaring.
Then I realized how close we were and what exactly he was wearing.
Or rather, what he wasn’t wearing.
I let my eyes travel down the length of his body and I bit my lip, glaring at the towel hanging dangerously loose on his hips. “Fuck, Reita.” I wasn’t aware I’d said it out loud until he replied.
“Do you want it, Kyo?”
I nodded.
He leaned forward and I fell back against the door again as his body inched closer to mine, his skin so close and his lips practically breathing air in to my own. “Do you want it?” He whispered again. I looked in to his eyes and was helpless to stop myself from closing the distance between us.
It was only a brief touch of the lips before he pulled back and gave me a smirk. “Well, you can’t have it.” He ruffled my hair and pulled the door open. “So suck it up.”
As he left the stall I closed my eyes and placed a hand on the wall to steady myself.
I will not give in. I will not give in. I will not give in.
