Social Security

The news today was glum. I plan to draw as a widow
next year, then in 6 years on my own record. Now,
will there be social security? If not, I will be
in the street starving. Will the government not
leave those of us in this age group and older
stranded or do you think they will rectify so
that we won't be destitute. I'm freaked. Any
wisdom will be

What the heck did you hear on the news? I just scanned all the usual sources and didn't see anything to make you think that Soc Sec was in jeopardy, what did I miss?

I read this morning where social security
will be sorely depleted by 2019, medicare
by 2017. I just wonder if there will be a
fix, how it will affect me, etc.

Seems like someone says that every few years. With the baby boomers moving into retirement, I really don't think that that can happen, politically, at least not till that particular cohort is too old to matter. Still, I know it must be scary.

The news is that if there is no reform,
it'll be caput sooner, like around 2019.
I just wonder how the reform, if there
is one, will affect me, others like me
who are almost 60, current retirees
for that matter.

11 years is quite a while
they will find some way to retool
it without dropping people out I am
sure, any other course would not be
politically feasible...
dire warnings about the future can
be found on many subjects I guess but I
like the old saying which I think perhaps
is Irish "nothing's eaten as hot ss
its cooked."

Well, I'm half Irish and so that
has gotten my attention. I'll
sleep better tonight. You're a
good friend, Vladika.

I'm not up on the news from the US regarding SS because I will never draw any, not having lived or worked there long enough to do so. So I looked up what had been said. There's an alarmist attitude that repeats itself every so often it seems to me. I'm fairly certain a way will be found to cover everybody who has paid their dues. What usually happens is that the new folks who are just starting out may have to adapt, pay more into the system etc.

I surely hope that's the case, that it will
be remedied no one suffers unduly.

i've been hearing that for a long time, that SS won't be available to us. i hope seraphim and cronopio are right, that they'll find a fix for it.

It's a Ruse mizannie March 27 2008, 12:57:49 UTC
The Republicans are manufacturing a crisis,
so it appears. They want money going into
the private sector and this is their way
of making that happen. The fixes are failry
simple and wouldn't be a strain on anyone.
Something does have to be done, though, and
if done now, it won't be dramatic.
