I used to love goosebumps, but I grew out of them...serafainaApril 22 2008, 20:52:04 UTC
CLEARLY she likes #124. DUH. That's the BEST one. You know, where the kid suddenly has some weird thing happen and she almost dies like twice before she finds out her family was in on it. You know. That one.
Ok. So, I know I'm going to catch hell for this, and I'm not defending laura Bush as a person but....
The whole reason my sister started reading books at all is because of Betty and Veronica comics and Goosebumps. I'm not saying its great literature, but it's a stepping stone to better books.
I'm not hating on R.L. Stine.mizunolApril 22 2008, 22:17:45 UTC
I too read many a Goosebumps book.
Really it's bizarre enough when the First Lady is a guest host on the Today Show, but then for her to say that R.L. Stine is one of her favorite authors? That's just freaking weird.
Wow, I thought those were lame when I was about 9 years old.
That really disturbs me- she's a librarian, but no one in her family or most of her husband's top administration appears to have ever read anything at a level higher than...dare I say it...R.L. Stine.
I sometimes think the best way to get reluctant or poor readers hooked would be comic books, but I might be biased.

Man, I haven't thought about that show in forever! Do you remember the hand puppets Pizza Hut used to have? *rummages through closet* Those things were way cooler than any happy meal toy...
Speaking of Pizza Hut,takiaizawaApril 24 2008, 20:10:23 UTC
Nate and I both went to school with several people who wouldn't've had dinner a few nights a week if it wasn't for Pizza Hut's Book It promotion. Corporate-sponsored literacy may be dubious, but my anti-capitalism stance isn't as strong as my anti-child starvation stance.
It would be great if lots of businesses offered a program like that. Read a book, don't starve. Why can't Laura Bush promote a program like that instead of becoming spokesperson for everyone and their brothers' do-nothing literacy programs?

Can't say as how Book It saved us from going hungry, but it was the only way we could afford to eat out. Do they still do Book It? I don't know since we don't have an eat-in Pizza Hut around here.
Crap... now I'm craving pizza. Better crack the books first. ^_^

And I had Goosebumps and Fear Street like you wouldn't believe.
R.L. Stine also wrote for Eureeka's Castle.
