A bunch of the Tech crew came up for PAX last month. It was awesome! Even though I don't really care to go with them, it's still a great opportunity to get everyone together again. Hopefully it will continue to be a yearly event. I think the girls should come to Seattle that weekend too, and we can do something less nerdy together ( Read more... )

Wow, I'm surprised they can legally ask for the money back. What kind of business was it?

Good luck on your job search!!

I used to work as a programmer at an aircraft company. I guess this situation isn't really different from if they had accidentally paid me a million dollars instead of my normal (much smaller) amount. That would still be an obvious mistake on their part, and I'd be expected to return the extra money. But understanding the situation doesn't make me any happier to be in it. At least it's better than last summer when I didn't get the last paycheck from one job, and didn't get the first paycheck from the next job. They were two totally unrelated errors that made me pretty stressed about how I was going to pay rent. Luckily both got fixed soon, so it was like getting 3 paydays all at once!

Yeah, an extra check you have to return would be a lot better than missing out on multiple checks. I just recall Sangeeta told me about something happening at Caltech where a student was paid at a higher rate than normal for about a month or two, and they couldn't ask for the money back. Maybe that wasn't because of some legal reason, or because it was a school, or because someone didn't want to be embarrassed about acknowledging they'd made a clerical error or something. *shrug* Eh.

What kinds of gigs are you looking for?

In Wichita I had been writing C++ applications to support CATIA V5, which is one of the CAD programs used heavily in the aircraft and automotive industries. I'd really like to continue with that so that I can build on these skills I've been working on developing. At this point however, I'm starting to look around at other options too.

I do refuse to run a cash register or sack groceries at this point. I reserve the right to change my mind in a month or so. ;)
