How do I boost MKV/h264 performance?

Oct 07, 2009 21:43

OK, all you AV types, your help would be appreciated.

I grabbed an anime in h264 at 720p resolution, but it's lagging the video pretty noticeably at many points, others are artifacting or just breaking up a few frames going forward.

Anyone know how I can fix this? I'm running The Core Media Player or VLC Player with the latest CCCP and FFDShow

Oh, it's brand new. Dual-core 2.53ghz, 1066mhz FSB/3mb L2 cache, 4gb RAM, 1gb Mobility Radeon GPU.

CCCP seems to just dump every codec possible into your machine, so I don't really trust it. VLC has always worked perfectly for me, so I'd stick with that if possible. I guess just go with the regular first steps of not running anything else at the same time and allowing it more memory if possible. VLC also has a crapton of options, so there may be a few that'll help you along. I think utilizing dual-core processors may be one of them.

Both nVidia and ATI have h.264 decoding capabilities in their recent GPUs. I don't know what software in Windows supports this, but if you've got something recent it should be able to handle that no problem.

I have the same probs, have the same things you do installed (well, I use MPC) and a dual-core (2ghz, 4gb RAM, though it's a laptop). It seems to run okay mostly until there is a lot happening on screen. Credits seem to really goof things up due to the amount of text. Really annoying on softsub files as the subs often end up going out of sync when the video lags. Haven't found a way around it yet ;_;

Adam suggests try using Media Player Classic with configuring your CCCP settings.
