Movies
Every time I think maybe I should go back to watching movies more often, something happens to change my mind. This time, it's Ice Age. Trying to reassure one's daughter while not making an issue of how one is reacting to the emotional stuff in the movie is just mega-stressful.
Ice Age II, on the other hand, was reasonably fun. -
Feeling accomplished
- dinner with friend (including sudden impromptu drive out to collect friend for happy dining experience = win!)

Stuff that made me happy this week
Ada, on Wednesday, as I carried her down Cambridge Terrace, exclaimed 'Oh, Mama! Your hair! Your beautiful, beautiful hair!' several times. She was just thrilled with it ( Read more... ) -
Clothes for children (rant)
One of the most irritating things I've recently seen was an eight-year-old at an adventure playground. I'm sure her parents thought she looked good. Plain, simple, cool summer clothing and all that. It was a calf-length cotton dress, and it had a vaguely 'practical but pretty' look ( Read more... ) -
Ada's latest literary response: Dr Seuss
At the end of The Cat in the Hat, the book asks the reader what they would say if their mother came home to such a situation (the cat has caused great chaos, but then tidied up impeccably) and enquired what they'd been doing.
Ada, apparently, would dance. -
Change of pace
I went to the Linux conference dinner tonight, with Ada and Rodger. It's weird to see people one hasn't set eyes on in over a decade. Even weirder when Rodger and I both know someone, but he doesn't know we're together (it's our fourteenth anniversary in a couple of months ( Read more... ) -

I just put Ada to bed. After she finished telling me I was singing 'Bye-oh Baby' wrong and kindly offering to sing it with me (I got it right, then), she snuggled down to sleep. Now I'm listening to her singing 'Uncle John's Band' (by The Grateful Dead) to herself -- at least one full verse and the chorus. I started learning it about a week ago ( Read more... )
