Character
Name: Cheyenne
Gender: Female
Age: Unspecified, due to a very slow aging process (explained in depth below). Appears to be around 14.
Wing Color: Ash Grey
Physical Appearance: Cheyenne has blonde hair with large bouncy curls that hang to a little over shoulder length. Her eyes are always covered by a white cloth due to her abilities (explained below). Should someone be able to see them, they appear to give off the same luster as the
inside of a mussel shell. There is no pupil or sclera, and they are just as easily damaged as human eyes. She has a thin build, pale skin, and her body type places her somewhere between the ages of 12-14 physically. She usually wears a short purple dress with tights and black shoes.
History:
Cheyenne was born in a nation known as Aregania, where a powerful monarchy had kept the lands and their citizens at peace for centuries. In the lowlands of Aregania, people known as Elemen lived. In this world, there were two kinds of humans: those without powers who lived in northern Aregania, and those with elemental powers that flow through a
separate circulatory system in their body.
The elemen, believing they were a higher form of evolution in the timeline of humanity, rebelled against the reigning Areganians. Their elemental abilities gave them a stronger advantage against the powerless humans. Each elemen possessed only one of the following: fire, water, lightning, (plant) life, wind, and light. By the time Cheyenne was born, most of the Areganians had been wiped out by war and their royal family was massacred. Aregania was under control of the Elemen.
However, the crimes of their people paid a heavy cost. The elemen had prayed to their deities for help in removing the Areganians from power. Using the power of the Gods, their armies acted like barbarians, tearing through cities and murdering innocent citizens. Seeing the way their blessings had been used in such twisted ways, the gods punished the fore-runners of the rebellion: the leaders of the different elemental clans. Their souls were painfully torn from their bodies, leaving behind mere traces of who they once were. Only one person survived this process: Valorini, head of the Light eleman clan. Instead of death, she had been transformed into a monster, craving the souls of others to make up for her own lack of one. Using her ability to manipulate light, she created illusions of terror that incited strong emotional responses within her fellow elemen and tore out their souls, feeding on them rather like a vampire. She had become the first Illusionist.
To an Illusionist, a
soul is a near-physical part of what makes up a person. All living things possess a soul. To an Illusionist, each soul is broken up into four distinct categories: length, strength, potency, and power. For Valorini, the only section of her soul remaining was Power, allowing her body to continue living indefinitely. The souls she took were converted into more Power, which prolonged her life for decades. And yet no matter how many souls she devoured, her hunger was never satisfied: she still lacked the rest of her own soul.
Fifty years later, Valorini had decimated the populations of elemen. Wars began sprouting between the existing Elemental clans as the people struggled to appoint new leaders and deal with the monster that could decimate all life and create ghost towns in just one night. As the flames of chaos tore across the planet, the elemen were faced with just one solution: they had to leave. Aregania is a large nation on a small planet and there were no alternatives for them outside the country. Pleading once more to their gods, the elemen were given an answer with the discovery of the Enchanted Forest.
Believed to be a hub that connected every world in ever universe amidst a sea of evergreen trees, the gods sent signs directing the elemen to enter the forest in the hopes of discovering a new world to inhabit. There was a stark rift between those who trusted the gods and those who did not. In the end, only the Light eleman clan stayed behind as the rest of the remaining elemen clans marched towards an unknown future. In the course of a hundred days, the wars grew quiet and the cities were emptied. The Light elemen, still distrustful of the gods because of what happened to their once beloved leader Valorini, stayed behind even as their numbers continued to dwindle. Within a few short years, only one village remained. Within that village was where Cheyenne lived.
She was only 7 years old when it became known that they were the only surviving eleman clan in Aregania. The village leaders set up large watch towers to guard against Valorini. By now, not even she was the sole problem: large creatures and monsters that had once been small and controlled populations now dominated the landscape, making it impossible for any person to set foot outside the city and expect to come back alive. Still, the people did their best to try and survive. Cheyenne's family was no exception. She lived alone with her mother and had just begun attending the local school. She knew little of the world rampaging just outside the borders of her city. In fact, she knew little of anything, having spent most of her life cooped up inside the safety of her mother's one room house. She was shy around the other kids at school, and spent much of her time sitting alone with her legs folded up to her chest and her face tilted towards the sky.
Things changed during the next year. Valorini was becoming smarter, wiser. She was no longer bound by the same ties of insanity that led her to massacre her people. Instead, she began to think logically and plot: she knew well that if the last of the elemen disappeared, she would be without a viable food source. So, rather than kill the remaining elemen, she let their numbers grow. But fate had other things in mind, and instead disease ran rampant in the small, clustered city. Resources for food and water were quickly running dry. The city would not last to repopulate. And so, Valorini took matters into her own hands. She set out to create minions in the same image as herself that could retrieve the souls of the elemen who fled this world and bring them back to her to be devoured. She only needed subjects to turn, and then she could set her plan to action!
The school was on a hill located far from the center of town. It was there where Cheyenne saw her mother for the last time. As soon as the children were released for recess, Valorini invaded the city with a herd of trained monsters and kidnapped the children. Mimicking the same procedure done to her by the angered Gods, Valorini experimented with the children by removing their souls and leaving only a small piece of a particular section. Once the initial shock of losing a crucial part of their humanity had passed, the children became like mindless servants to do her bidding. Cheyenne, being one of the first, was left with only a portion of her Power left, allowing her to stay living. But along with that was a sliver of Potency, the emotional center of the soul, which had gone unnoticed by her creator. Their desire to feed combined with their Light elemental abilities led Valorini to call them her Illusionists.
When Cheyenne next awoke, she remembered nothing of her past as an eleman. She didn't even have a name anymore. And the only thing she felt was pain, as if she hadn't eaten in days. Sent into the forest with her fellow illusionists, they managed to follow the same path the previous elemen had taken and wound up in another world. The illusionists, filled with a desire to regain the part of their soul they had lost, swarmed over the elemen residing in this new world. Due to their innocent, child-like appearance, no one made the connection between them and their creator, the infamous monster from Aregania.
But that didn't matter. Even if the elemen had no idea where they came from, they knew that the illusionists had to be exterminated before their own population was wiped out. Eventually, the only solution they could find was to lure them into a city and burn it to the ground, destroying everything inside. In one campaign, over half of the illusionists perished. Cheyenne, one of the first, was now one of the last. While many of them returned through the forest to where their creator lived, Cheyenne stayed in this new world. Unlike her sisters, who ate continuously until no elemen were left, Cheyenne never took more than enough for the hunger to go away. It never lasted more than a week, but that week was one spent in solitude and peace, until she'd have to feed again. The fact that she often allowed her victims to live (although severely changed by the experience nonetheless) helped keep her under the radar.
As the weeks turned into years, Cheyenne's life remained at the same steady pace. The elemen continued to flourish, despite the persistence of the illusionists. Well over a hundred years passed before something finally changed. Cheyenne stopped a group of travelers on the road for her usual weekly meal, a married couple and their young daughter. Quickly knocking out the father, Cheyenne was prepared to attack the child when the mother suddenly dove in between them and cried out, "I won't let you hurt Cheyenne!"
And she stopped. The illusion that the mother saw was not fearful at all. Instead, the memories of Cheyenne's past flashed before her eyes as the illusionist began to recall the life that was taken away from her so long ago. Confusion overtook her, and the illusionist fled.
Soon, pieces of her old life began to haunt her. She'd close her eyes to fall asleep and hear the soft humming of a mother who wasn't there, singing her child to sleep. Visions of school children playing in the yard, not a care in the world, brought along a strange sensation deep inside her. Nostalgia? Sorrow? Guilt? She couldn't put a name to it, but she knew it was there: she had feelings. For the first time since she became an illusionist, Cheyenne felt something other than hunger. Unfortunately, these feelings were not a one-time thing, and guilt was not a beneficial emotion for a creature that needed to kill others to survive. Cheyenne could no longer bring herself to end the life of another creature by sucking out its entire soul. And so, she began to improvise.
She struck deals with the elemen she ambushed after that. Sacrifice one of their own and the rest would be unharmed. It only took one group to agree to her terms peacefully for her to reveal her true intentions: not only was the rest of the group unharmed, even her victim walked away with little more than a headache. Tales of the "tamed illusionist" were passed along throughout cities. Eventually, those stories made their way to a City of Flame eleman known as Stendrion, which had long been under rule by a ruthless dictator. The idea that illusionists, long believed to have been mindless monsters, could be tamed was a very appealing idea to this man. Known only by his subjects as "The Great Leader", he left his capital in search of this one of a kind creature.
And he found her. Fooling her into believing one of his men were offering themselves up to her, he overwhelmed her with his military forces and enslaved her as his own personal torture device. Forced to use her powers against anyone the Great Leader considered to be an enemy, Cheyenne never went hungry. And she was overwhelmed with guilt. The memories of her origins still haunted her, making her all too aware of the fact that she was essentially killing her own kind. Finally, Cheyenne was fed up: when a new victim was brought before her, Cheyenne struck a deal with them through a vision: if they pretended to be suffering and allow her a chance to escape, she would leave their soul intact. And while the Great Leader watched his enemy "suffer", Cheyenne turned away sharply, dove out the nearest window and then...!
She suddenly found herself in Luceti.
Personality: Despite being a creature that is considered to be a monster by many in her own world, Cheyenne is far from a monster in her behavior. She speaks very formally to people she doesn't know very well. The more she is around someone, the more relaxed and casual her speech patterns may become, generally because she'll start picking up on the way they talk. She doesn't see anything wrong with the way she talks, since she doesn't understand how it makes her sound cold to other people. After all, to her, she is only being polite!
Unlike most illusionists, Cheyenne has the ability to feel and somewhat understand emotions. Over the years, she has managed to pick up on the easiest to identify: happy, sad, angry, and scared. However, even those simple emotions are difficult for her to comprehend. If she is at a loss, she may ask out-right what a person is feeling. This is more out of curiosity and for the sake of holding a conversation than it is out of any actual concern for that person.
That's not to say that she isn't capable of caring about others, of course. Another notable trait of Cheyenne's is her possessiveness. She doesn't make friends often, but when she does, she becomes very attached to them. She's spent much of her life being hated and feared by the elemen she fed upon, so finding someone who doesn't flinch at the sight of her doesn't happen every day. Jealousy isn't an emotion she deals with very often, but if someone she's close to starts paying more attention to someone else when they're around her, she'd recognize the feeling. In fact, she'd probably tell the offending parties outright that she is jealous and that she is sorry for it. However, just because she cares about someone doesn't mean she has qualms about feeding off of them. While she may feel more concern for their well-being after the fact, when she needs to feed, she'll never turn down an offer from someone just because they are a friend.
Given the opportunity, Cheyenne would prefer to never show her own limited emotions. However, since she knows others aren't capable of reading how a person is feeling by looking at their soul, she's learned to force herself to show how she's feeling on her face. If she's in a good mood, she'll smile once or twice so others around her can tell she's happy. At the same time, if she's angry or in a bad mood, she'll probably appear to over-react to whoever sees her, since she feels she has to show that she's angry. In actuality, should Cheyenne ever become completely enraged, she'd probably be too angry to bother showing her emotions and would appear completely blank (although for sake of having more than 15 |: icons, her expressions are a bit more exaggerated).
Finally, a major part of who Cheyenne is involves guilt. On one hand, she doesn't find any pleasure in bringing harm to people. On the other, Cheyenne knows she must feed on them if she wants to keep on living. Usually she rationalizes that if she doesn't feed now, she'll lose her mind and go on a rampage possibly killing dozens of people as opposed to injuring one. The guilt of what she has to do to stay alive is what keeps her peaceful. Should she ever lose her sense of guilt, she'd go back to being a monster who feeds constantly.
Illusions
Cheyenne is an illusionist. Her abilities stem from what she used to be, an elemental who could manipulate light and create things that weren't really there. The difference here is how she makes these illusions. Unlike a Light eleman, whose illusions are safe and visible to all, an illusionist can only show her illusions to someone when she is looking into their eyes.
Usually, she has no control over the illusions. If someone looks into her eyes when she is unprepared, they will be sucked into an illusion showing them what they fear the most. This could be something physical, such as spiders, or something emotional, such as a fear of loss or death. How it will be shown is unique to that person and Cheyenne never sees the illusion herself. The illusions move in real time, so if eye-contact is broken fast enough, the person may not even have a chance to react to what they have seen. However, it takes strong will-power to break from an illusion using the mind alone. The victim will not be able to see anything except for their illusion, so attacking the illusionist would have to be done by a third party.
At other times, Cheyenne can control what that person will see. In these cases, the illusions are not always negative. She can show someone a field of flowers or a starry night sky. However, even if the illusion does not cause that person pain, Cheyenne will still be feeding off of them in some way whether she does so intentionally or not. In truth, illusionists have very little control over much of their powers, which is why Cheyenne is forced to wear a blindfold; even a glimpse of her eyes could accidentally trap an innocent person in an illusion.
In Luceti, this power will be weakened. If a person has something over their eyes (dark/reflective sunglasses, etc) they will be able to see Cheyenne's eyes and not be sucked into an illusion. On this note, if Cheyenne looks into a pure reflective surface (no imperfections like cracks or ripples) she can accidentally trap herself into an illusion and will remain in that state for up to a day after. This usually ends up being fatal to the Illusionist.
Feeding
When Cheyenne feeds, she is feeding off of a person's
soul. It appears as a silken thread-like material pulled from a person's chest. In this case, the soul means something a little different. As explained by the link, there are four sections of a soul, and each effect a person differently when they are taken away. Due to Cheyenne's peaceful nature, she never takes more than she needs to live, and even then, she usually draws from the Power section of a soul (which replenishes itself within a person after a good night's sleep or a large meal). This section of the soul can be drawn out without the need to frighten her victim (ie: a peaceful illusion). However, if a person sees her eyes and is shown their greatest fear, Cheyenne will feed off the Potency section of the soul instead due to the surge of powerful emotion associated with fear.
When a person has had the Potency section of their soul drained, they will essentially be without emotions for a period of time. If less than 50% is taken (which is still much more than Cheyenne needs to survive)
Cheyenne will need to feed on a soul twice a week to keep from getting too hungry, and once a month if she merely wants to survive (she also eats regular food, in addition to souls, in order to sustain regular body functions). If she goes without eating too long, she will temporarily lose her sanity and feed on everything in sight until completely satiated. If a scenerio like this ever happened where she took a person's entire soul, she would have to die for the souls to be returned (assuming the person didn't die as well).
Finally, the physical strain brought on by removing parts of a person's soul will reflect the same strain put on the person whose soul is being taken. So, if the person were to pass out shortly after the experience, so would Cheyenne.
Vision
This is not so much ability, as it just explains how she can get around despite wearing the blindfold (as well as how her sight functions when her eyes are open). Because she needs to feed on souls in order to survive, Cheyenne has another sense dedicated to sensing and analyzing the souls of living things around her. This is how she knows which section of the soul to feed on. Even with her eyes closed, she can feel when a creature possessing a soul comes near her. And since every person's soul is unique, she can tell when different people are approaching her.
However, even with her eyes open, what she sees is not the same as what is truly there. If a creature has a soul, then she will see that person as a representation of their soul. This is usually a soft, colorful glow in that person's shape, the hue of which varies by the person. Only the eyes can be seen as they truly appear. Inanimate objects are seen very faintly in grayscale, but if the object is moving, she can see it a little more clearly. Finally, creatures without souls but are still alive are seen as inanimate objects (this also includes plants and the like). Unless her other senses tell her otherwise (she hears them speak, smells them if they are organic, etc) she may treat them as an inanimate object unintentionally.
Her vision with her eyes closed and her vision with her eyes open work in roughly the same way. The only difference is that inanimate objects (such as walls) become much harder to see and she had a tendency of missing the occasional corner if she walks too fast. Basically: she walks into walls sometimes.
Strengths:
1. Since she can "see" people without even needing her eyes open, it's pretty hard to sneak up on her.
2. It's difficult to make her angry or upset, unless you harm someone she cares about.
3. She has incredible willpower, seeing as she is basically surrounded by "food" and yet chooses not to feed more than necessary to keep herself alive.
Weaknesses:
1. Mirrors can kill her.
2. She has a hard time reading emotions that aren't blantantly obvious. Unless someone is crying, she won't know they're sad. The only one she understands well is fear.
3. At the same time, she has trouble showing her own emotions. She does have them, but they are very muted. This will probably make it harder for people to become close with her.
4. It's hard for people to become close to her. Literally. Because she is the product of a cursed being, physically touching her will give people chills or suddenly make them feel sad and upset.
5. Evil powers aside, she's just a little girl. She can't fight at all. Just push her down and run away!
6. Her eyes are very fragile and if they become damaged, she'll starve but never actually die unless she stops eating real food as well.
7. She can't read, so written posts will be ignored, sob.
