[The last event left Cheyenne in a weird place and since then, she's been rather scarce around the village. Aside from getting food at one of the village restaurants, she's spent most of her time either in her apartment or in the forests just outside the village. Today, she's actually back to her usual spot: sitting on the edge of one of Luceti's ( Read more... )

[A timid squeak comes over the journal.]

A-a person is someone with hopes and dreams, feelings, a heart and spirit. I-it doesn't matter what they look like on the outside; what species they are. Anyone or anything that can think enough to have hope deserves to be called a person.

By that definition, then, a creature incapable of feeling hope would not be considered a person?

I...don't know. It's not my place to decide who isn't a person...

I wonder whose place it could be, to decide such a thing. If a creature could be considered a person by one and a monster by another, which would be correct, I wonder.

...y'know, I've never really thought about it.

I can't say I thought about it much myself until very recently.

Recently, huh?

...I guess I think of "people" as...creatures that talk and live together in families or towns without wanting to attack everyone else all the time.

That's what all the "people" we've met are like.

Is having a family an important part of being considered a person?

[one of the bridges, you say? Aella might just pass by there on her way back to the village, a bag of plant cuttings at her side. She pauses, though, upon seeing a blindfolded girl sitting... on a bridge. Above the river.]

You should be careful not to fall.

[Something strange is approaching. That is the only way Cheyenne can possibly thing to describe it. Three seemingly distinct souls standing together is if occupying the same space... she doesn't even have to turn her head to "see".]

[It takes a moment for her to realize she'd been spoken to.]

I have grown accustomed to sitting in such places as these. I am in no danger of falling, I assure you.

You have....? Well, that's good then. [Still a bit unsure, but she'll take her word for it. She'd hate to see a girl drown because of something as silly as this.] The rivers are quite deep here.

Yes, they are. [She leans forward a bit, as if looking down at the water despite her blindfold.]

There is much life living here below the surface. Although the rivers seem slightly less populated in the areas nearest the bridges, they are still rather interesting for me.

Having a heart, mostly.

...simply the presence of a physical organ would define a person to you?

[Why does this sound familiar.]

Well the heart's what gives someone emotions and all that, right? It tells you what to think, what to feel. Most vital part to an existence and what makes that existence real-at least that's what I've been told, anyway.

As far as I am aware, the physical heart plays no role in emotion. It simply serves to pump blood to vital organs in the body.

Unless, perhaps, that is simply a difference in terminology between our worlds?

To be able to feel emotions, whether they be positive or negative. [...] What kind of answers have you been getting so far? [She's genuinely curious.]

Many answers, actually. Some far different from others.

Although yours is the first to be centered entirely on a creature's ability to feel emotions.

[She opens her mouth for a moment, and promptly closes it. It's a little hard to take what's in her mind and form them into words, so the response is a bit delayed.]

I don't think being a person means that you have to be human, or anything like that. It's a pretty debatable topic, so... [A beat.] Hey, what does it mean to be a person to you? [You sort of remind her of someone back home, hence the interest.]

To be honest, it is not the sort of thing I have thought about very much. Until now, I was under the impression being a person simply related to being or acting human.
