Sweet languor releases her slowly, limb by limb. She wakes in a bed strewn with roses and black hellebore. Pale ribbons twine around her arms; long skirts snake around her legs.
The wide balcony before the bed reveals unfamiliar stars above an alien horizon. Once, with spread wings and spear in hand, she would have hastened to learn any new battlefield. Battlefields were all that she ever saw.
Now she pleats her coverlet with dull, callused fingers.
Soon her unknown husband will come to claim his new bride.
Gwendolyn brings her scarred hands to her face and begins to cry.
