Coldest I ever experienced was up in Scotland one winter, when it was - 13 (C), and as we were driving, I kept having to lean out the window and spray de-icer on the windscreen to stop the ice from forming on it.
That doesn't sound like a very pleasant drive. The roads were probably nasty as well, I imagine? Yuck. Did all the power functions of your vehicle freeze up too? Mine didn't even want to start this morning and then the power sliding door refused to work.
It's weird, but in Scotland, they really know how to deal with snow and ice - all the roads are well treated, and the plows are always out clearing the main roads. On the drive back, though, as soon as we hit the "Welcome To England" sign - total chaos.
Boyfriend's car is awash with power functions (it's one of those ones where the only thing you can do yourself is change the washer fluid - anything else, you need a man in overalls with a laptop), but apart from seeing some warning symbols we'd never seen before on the display (which seemed to amount ot it saing 'by heck, it's cold'), it was fine. I daresay another ten degrees colder would have seen to that, though!
Wow! I didn't think I'd get a chance to use this icon until next Christmas. Thanks for the excuse! It got down to 10 today, but that's not nearly as cold as -18. Brr! I did raise my thermostat up to 72 from 68. I generally always keep mine at 68 (cause I'd rather wear sweaters than pay more money for gas. I'm cheap like that) but today was too chilly.
Are you telling me you managed to read 100 updates today? *low whistle* I'm surprised your eyes didn't dry out completely! Hope there were some good reads in there! :)
The outdoor thermometer said -7 this morning. If it really hits -18 next weekend, I'll probably wish I'd saved some of those alerts to read then, because there's no way in heck I'm going outside for any reason!
No, I didn't read all 100 today. I started yesterday early afternoon and, other than brief pauses to feed the children and pets (and go to church this morning) that's all I've done all weekend. Shameful, really.
We keep our thermostat set around 68 also. The way the poor furnace has to struggle just to keep it that warm is sad. I can almost see the propane gauge dropping on the tank. :(
Have I mentioned I hate winter? (cute icon though)
Have you lived in that state your whole life? This is my sister's first winter back from three in LA and she's going nuts. She grew up in Chicago, went to college in Boston and now can't handle the Chicago winters any more.
Pretty much, yes, I've always lived within a few hours' drive of here. If I moved anywhere with nicer weather, my parents would probably never see us again, because I don't think I could make myself come back. I feel bad for your sister. Going from LA to Chicago winters would be rotten, even having grown up there.
I think they started building up in Nov/Dec, when ffdotnet had several weeks of down time followed by floods of alerts. Only one so far today, and it's for a fic I don't really follow anymore, so I think I'll be able to stay on top of that from now on. ;)
Not 100 stories, but close to 100 chapters/one-shots I suppose, over the 24-hour stretch. Luckily, some of the updates turned out to be duplicates. And I was bad and barely reviewed any. :( I promise to do better and keep up from now on!
What do I do when the weather is this cold? READ! lol
LOL, oh I see. I thought you were wondering if I was some crazy lunatic who LOVED winter and cold so I could go ice fishing and snowmobiling. ;) We still have school and everything, but the kids don't go outside for recess, they just have it in they gym. They are far more conservative and if the weather looks threatening or the roads are icy, they'll cancel. It's too dangerous to be out with exposed skin in those temps. Frostbite happens in minutes.
"that just adds to the incentive to finish my one-shot"
Well, shoot! If I'd known you were waiting on me, I'd have done it sooner! :D
I would have absolutely no objection to cold and snow if it wasn't such an exaggerated season here. Some years winter lasts 6 months. I shouldn't really complain so much about this winter; it didn't get really nasty until after Christmas. Not like last year when a horrible ice storm took out power, water, phones and cell service for a week after T'giving.
It's so dang cold even the buffalo are looking for warmer stomping grounds. (Just kidding, I know you hate it when people call bison 'buffalo') ;)
Well, shoot! If I'd known you were waiting on me, I'd have done it sooner! :D I've been waiting on me to make a POV decision. First I was writing from Hermione's. Then I decide that wasn't working and redid it from Remus'. Then I decided I didn't like that either. Now we've moved on the third person omniscient after the discussion at Lisa's and some serious pondering on my part. I'm still not sure that's working, but it's better than either of the other two. If I can't get this to cooperate, the story may get thrown out the window and the theory posted as an essay.
Y'know... I don't really notice the buffalo as much anymore. I've got my brained trained so I read it like buffalobison and just move on. If the rest of the world wants to be wrong, I'll let 'em and just correct them in my own little world.

How long did it take to get up to 100 alerts?

It's been so hot here in Rio that sometimes I am discouraged to go out because of the burning Sun!

And you know, if you had managed to plow through 100 stories AND review them all as well, I'd just have to come up there and beat you. ;)

I like the cold. I like snow. But that's getting a bit ridiculous.
