This is why I have not been shy about spoiling myself a little in case I ever get around to watching these last two seasons....best to know going in that some things don't change, and Chris Carter is one of them.
The thing is, S11 is actually pretty good! Far and away better than S10, in my opinion. The key is just to skip the three episodes that are mythology/William-centric and just watch the MOTW eps. The last episode before the finale ends with a very sweet Mulder/Scully scene that basically reconfirms their commitment to each other and is a completely satisfying place to end their story.
Gillian Anderson too comes off as really pissed about the ending on Twitter, CC said that he deliberately withheld the ending from both actors until they filmed the last scene, and you definitely get the impression that she’s not too thrilled about it
The way that Scully just shrugged off William was so OOC, she was still the biological mother at the end of the day anyway, but also she raised him for an entire year, she spend years searching for him, and then her only conclusion in the end is that he was never really hers?!
Thanks for inspiring me to go look at Gillian Anderson's Twitter so that I could appreciate the fact that she's as annoyed by this ending for Scully as I am.

Right??? Her reaction to hearing about his "death" is completely at odds with everything we've been shown about the grief and guilt Scully has carried around with her since giving him up for adoption. It's honestly such an insult to Scully.
Heh well I should say that she didn’t say anything outright, it was mostly the eye rolling gif of Scully she posted to acknowledge the fan response to the finale that got people speculating that she agrees with the fans
