After liturgy on Lazarus Saturday, the children stayed behind for a short lesson, made palm crosses and decorated candles with palm leaves, pussy willows and flowers. After communion on Palm Sunday, the children led a procession around the outside of the church, church bells were gonging, the children had bells around their wrists, and carried their candles and palms. Many of them had tied palm leaves around their heads, a tradition in the Ethiopian church. We have several Ethiopian families and a close relationship with a church in Kansas City which is heavily Ethiopian. All the rest of us followed the priest with the gospel book and carried our own palm leaves and pussy willows. It was very festive!
