Zoe's rats died a couple of years ago and we didn't replace them due to Luci's allergies. They lived for about 3 years. They were great. Super sweet and very attached to her. Easy to clean up after. We had females, which are not as cuddly, but also do not smell as bad. In fact, I didn't smell them at all if we kept the cage decently clean. Males, so I've been told, are very cuddly and smelly. Females are busy. They do not sit and cuddle. They have stuff to do, always on the move! But they play fun games and are easy to train, just as males are. The male/female decision really depends on why you want them. Zoe doesn't sit still either, so cuddly was not really necessary. She loved building them playscapes and devising games for them and crawling around the floor with them following her. They never once bit her on purpose, though there was a couple of accidently nips. They were incredibly tolerant and gentle. Females, especially, really need stimulation and company; new toys and games and chewies regularly and lots of
