That show being Legend of Korra, sequel series to one of my most favorite narratives of all time known as Avatar the Last Airbender. We are into the second week and three episodes and I finally feel that I can post thoughts. (Mostly on the third episode though because I feel everything that could ever be said about the first 2 has already been ( Read more... )

What annoys me is the whole Mako/Korra=Zuko/Katara thing is Mako is nothing like Zuko & Korra is nothing like Katara.

Unless being a fire bender & water bender was the main thing that defined their characters to these people or something I do not know....Mako is way too "grownup" to be Zuko lulz, of course I expect Mako will really have to grow up & perhaps let go of Bolin a bit but I just don't get the Zuko thing in him at all. And Korra is way too head strong & a bit immature to be Katara. Seriously fandom wth.

And don't even get me started on the way Zutara fans minds are working now that they know Katara & Zuko are still alive. Oh god why does such a wonderful series have to have such a messed up fandom.

Well yeah outside of the firebending/waterbending and shallow physical resemblences there just isn't much there for a comparison to be drawn on.

I see it mostly in comparing Mako and Zuko, but I'm increasingly becoming annoyed with the people describing Mako as emo and as having manpain, because I don't think he is all that emo. He doesn't seem to be drowning in self-pity or loathing in his lot in life, rather he is actively working and struggling through it. But I don't know I have grown to hate both terms and think fandom has the propensity to throw them around too liberally.

I can only really laugh at that. First off I refuse to believe that Zuko outlived Mai. She's still alive and her and Zuko yell at the kids to get off their lawn and are just generally all around adorable. I refuse to believe otherwise.

Not to disagree with your head canon but if Zuko is not inviting everyone over for tea I will be very disappointed. XD

And I need some Korra icons!

Oh I don't think that Zuko invites friends over like Katara. Just that Mai is there because she is still alive.

piconz made some nice ones from the first two episodes.

I think the Batman bit is based more on the parents being killed while being mugged in an alley than just "parents died in front of me." That said, having looked into the fandom for the first time after posting last night, well, things that are fun to joke and make a crack about and move on are less fun when you see lots of people saying it, only taking it seriously. (I'm not sure where "angsty Mako" is coming from, unless they're just assuming introvert + sad backstory = ANGST, because he hasn't shown and angstmuffin signs yet. Even talking about his parents was less MY ANGST and more "and this is why I'm protective of my brother and we have shady connections.) I think I'll be adding this to a fandom to avoid looking into much outside of my reading lists.

Yeah, agreed. When Mako said the line about his parents being mugged in an alley and killed in front of him, all three of us watching it sat up and went "AHAHAHAHA MAKO IS BATMAN!!" more or less simultaneously. I stand by that joke! But it's a joke, not actual characterization; the differences between Mako and Bruce Wayne are many and varied and fundamental.

(The more I hear about A:tLA fandom in any larger form than my friendslist and things linked to me, the more I'm glad to avoid it.)

I admit it is a visceral reaction because I in fact hate Batman, and nor do I have the history where I automatically make that connection.

But really, I just honest to god hate Bruce Wayne.
