Maybe a coincidence

Per ri.gov: On December 13, 2024, the State was informed by its vendor, Deloitte, that there was a major security threat to RIBridges, the system that manages many of the state’s social services programs. Additionally, Deloitte confirmed that there is a high probability that a cybercriminal has obtained files with personally identifiable ( Read more... )

My a priori gut feeling is that it is coincidence - such data breaches and leaks are quite common (even more so if you include the ones you're not informed about, or the ones the companies affected don't realize at that - you're only seeing the tip of the iceberg), and so are, deplorably, mass murders.

The picture's fun. Here's to toys in the bedroom.

Oh, yes, a coincidence, but what an odd one. Like the cyber truck explosion following NOLA- they’re connecting dots between those, or trying to. My main thought was how strange to have never heard of this company until now.

And hacks like this are exasperating! The ‘industry’ should be more secure so that it wouldn't rely on after the fact measures like credit locks and paid for monitoring: this should be in place already. To tell someone that their information was stolen but now they can secure this for a fee is asinine.

And toys! I loved the sequence of expressions here :o)

It is asinine, yes. The problem, I think, is one of incentives. Securing things properly has an obvious monetary cost, but what incentive does a company to have that cost when the costs of the alternative are, at best, reputational? Right now, these breaches are often someone else's problem, e. g. the customers' if it's customer data that is being leaked ( ... )

In simpler times the IRS would mail our tax booklets to us with our social security numbers printed right on the mailing label, above our names. And when I attended URI our student IDs had our SS numbers on them. That’s why I’m aggravated with the ‘system.’ It should be more secure by design with penalties for the folks handling the information.

Won’t happen. :o(

It was a fun outcome :o) I loved glow-in-the-dark items as a child (still do, of course). And that particular dino does look dangerous in bed…

I came back n read the threads abvout security measures too... very illuminating, and indeed frustrating that we won't likely get better practices from all the firms that should have it as a Priority :|

I put a freeze on my credit in September 2024 as my social security number was found on the dark web. It was due to some "public data" website getting hacked. I had never heard of it, but regardless, I made sure to take precautions.

If that comic took place in real life at a furry convention, the furs would be using the glow to show off "the goods" in the darkness of the hotel room. I could also easily see them saying "Spiked, for your pleasure!" LOL!

I froze my credit in 2020 when someone tried to collect unemployment with my information. I didn’t realize until trying to check transunion for my status that they only did this for one year! So I redid this now with Experian. What a sad state of affairs :o(

"Spiked, for your pleasure!" I thought of the glow, but hadn’t thought of possible uses…
