Today's Important Question: What's going on with my former self?Am I the only person in this godforsaken world who is great with names, but terrible with faces? It is quite common for me to go a week without seeing one of my closest friends and to grow completely disoriented when I see them again, realizing that their face looks completely ( Read more... )

Am I the only person on the planet who is great with names, but terrible with faces?

OMG, I thought I was the only one! I always remember names but get blurry on faces. I'm like the real life Lois Lane. I would have no idea that Clark Kent is really Superman because that clever glasses disguise fools me every time!

How would you feel if I told you that actually I haven't seen that movie, but that this may or may not be based on an actul event involving the movie Practical Magic, which I somehow did find to be too embarrassing to state in the post and so substituted another equally embarrassing Sandra Bullock film? Could we still be friends if I found the bravery to confess that in this comment? If you're on the fence, would it help if we acted out some of the Nicole Kidman/Sandra Bullock scenes from that movie?

I mean, come on, look at this dialogue (thanks IMDB):
Sally Owens: What would you do, Gilly?
Gillian Owens: What wouldn't I do... for the right guy?

Please, Hart Man. THINK OF ALL WE'VE SHARED.

love potion number nine was a fine fine movie, and poor tate donovan deserved better after that. overplayed on HBO, it's the new-generation "teen witch"-- another corny magical movie that seeps into your consciousness.

don't hate!

One possibility is that you may have some minor form of Prosopagnosia, a face recognition impairment.

You're an advance scout for a new species of hominid. They're collecting facial phenotypes in order to populate their genetic duplicates. Every time you see a face, it transfers from short-term memory to their databases (particles stored in our system's Oort cloud). The fact that you can't recognize these faces is a feature, not a bug, as it encourages repeat exposure leading to more data.

In other news, glad you're doing all right.

I have a worse affliction...I remember stalker-ish details about all sorts of people, constantly. I'm usually no good at remembering birthdays, or employers, or anything small-talk related, but I will often remember in what context I first saw someone, even if we never talked at that time, or afterwards. And then I bring it up when I actually meet them.

"Hey, James, this is $name."
"Hi James."
"Oh yeah, we took $class together $number years ago. You $past-participled the $noun with $noun [probably 'gusto']."
"Oh...yeah! Sure..."

Over the summer someone turned the tables on me, and recognized me from a class that I didn't remember seeing them in. It was eerie.
