On an individual level- usually because we are so busy looking at or for something specific, we don't see a bigger picture- in Zen, there is the idea of a man on a deer hunt isn't appreciating the beauty of the mountains for themselves... we don't often view life as a path, we view life as stepping over puddles- we care about each little step not getting wet without always thinking that we are eventually going to wind up somewhere.
Hmm, I think I just poetically described ignorance.
Or, there is those catch alls- greed and apathy- we know what we are doing, but do't really give a damn.
