Well duh! Everyone knows The Grateful Dead and all their imitator ilk (Widespread Panic/Phish) suck sweat camel balls and deserve to be forever entombed in the petrified remains of a hog farm shit lagoon.

Phish's output is pretty variable. Some of their albums are good (Rift is my favorite). Their fanbase makes them a bit harder to appreciate (they think Rift was their "sellout" work).

Phish's music really isn't my style. Extended jams from jam bands really piss me off. Especially live. I'm never stoned enough to care about twenty minutes of virtually the same guitar riff. When I enjoy music created by bands, I like lyrics and relatively concise delivery. So Phish's suspiciously Dead-like style aside, they're just not my style.

However, Phish fans...ugh. Maybe some day I'll make another epic post about how I can't stand hippies (and all their subspecies, including Deadheads and Phish phans). One of those is long overdue.

I can appreciate that perspective, although Phish's extended jams do actually change quite a lot. Then again, I also like Philip Glass's work, so.

I think this is pretty much what I'm going to be saying about Nirvana to young whippersnappers in like three years from now.

For me it sums up how I feel about people who listen to one or two Grateful Dead songs without understanding the rest of the catalog. Not that I'm that fond of their psychedelic-jam stuff or anything, but I appreciate its existence (and there's some very good freejazz stuff out there... incidentally, one of my favorite freejazz albums is "surrender to the air" which was a side project led by Phish's guitarist).

The album that "Touch of Grey" is on is generally pretty listenable though. But anyone who just listens to that one song repeatedly deserves a cockpunch and a curbstomp.
