That was...I didn't particularly like Atonement. I mean, there were definitely parts of it I could..respect and be in awe of, like the acting or the way they filmed it or the way scenes/props/rooms were set up, etc, but overall it was just..not my thing. With this story, I get the same, or at least a really similar vibe/feel to the movie, but it's..it doesn't end depressing, and seeing Charles and Erik switch back and forth in snippets of time is very..interesting, and makes me curious for each next snippet after another. And it's interesting to see them never really in a sort of balance until the end. It was almost always Charles being icy to Erik and Erik being gentle, or Erik being icy to Charles and Charles being gentle ( ... )

I wasn't very convinced by Atonement myself, book or movie. It didn't feel like satisfying storytelling, which I assume is really the point, but still. To make someone love a character and then utterly destroy it is rather harsh.

I was interested more than anything in the dynamics between two characters that have deeply hurt one another in different ways, but still feel the underlying stronger current of real affection to each other, and the disjointed snippets felt right, somehow.

You know, I wasn't aiming for a happy ending--I just wanted to show that they could find peace with one another even after everything that had happened. This is one of the reasons I said I wasn;t even sure if this story made sense, but I just... had to write it.

You're welcome <3 thanks for reading it, and taking the time to comment.

True, and true. That and I had an abundance of dislike and loathing for the little sister that basically ruined their lives. I couldn't get over how terrible things went, especially for Robbie. It was awful. I don't think I've ever loathed a character so much. fjdskl. It was a little hard to focus on other things in the movie, especially with how it turned out! Hrg.

Yess, and they were, at least I think so. At first I missed the longer showings of a period of time, but the snippets were..kind of raw, if that makes sense. They captured a moment, and often, if not all the time, they were times where emotions were running high and really got to you when you read them. It was good, and I think a good decision to go that way with it.

Well, mission achieved I say. And it might've been a little confusing here and there, since it was jumping? In time, but..I think that might just add to it. Like it's not really supposed to be overly sequential, but in the end everything still adds up.

omg. i love this.

i'm sure there have been other atonement aus already written, but i distinctly remember being rather unimpressed by them. this, however.

my initial reaction was that sort of unfussed, considering that it was an atonement au, and most atonement aus tend to be both rewrites of the film (rather than the book, which i am both offended by and immensely happy about, because ian mcewan is most definitely not my cup of tea); but it was at the top of a flist, and so i figured i'd give it a go. and, my god, am i glad i did.

oh, erik. erik. the whole attraction to charles, and the way that he refused to acknowledge it was gloriously done; and charles' subsequent forcible initiation of their relationship was wonderful. my heart. it is wounded.

and the way you brought it shaw was perfect. i just - ugh. erik.

the ending was. i just. can i roll in this forever? with the isolated ignoring of the world and the war and the happiness forever omg.

That was just a perfect ending - how wonderful that Charles and Erik did manage to find some happiness amongst all that harshness they've been subjected to.

Thank you! I know, right? I wasn;t thinking of happy ending, but I wanted them to find some measure of peace at the end. I guess I didn;t want to cheat them like Robbie and Cecilia were cheated.

I liked this so much! Much better ending than the original Atonement which, although clever, didn't work for me. I liked your idea, that Raven had been trying to protect Charles, as rationale for what she did -- much more understandable. And your writing, so languidly poetic, matched beautifully the way the film was shot and constructed. <3

Thank you so much! The original Atonement ending didn;t work for me either, it felt like it left a bitter taste in my mouth.

I'm glad the explanation of Raven's actions worked for you--I knew it felt like quite a stretch in the first chapter.

Thank you for the praises *blushes* <3
