I know about the Trojan War thing. I'm one of those wannabe novelists who say "I'm gonna write a book because I hate the Trojan War novels there are!" *coughs* Yeah...

And yes, loss of laptop does affect writing. I don't currently have a cord for mine, so all computer access I have is a few minutes on someone else's. Which slows me down. You aren't alone~!

I've started on it; it basically starts when Patroklos moves to Phthia, so it's mostly his thoughts on it for now. It started out as wanting to wage war on Hollywood for Troy. Maybe I'll make someone mad about the wonderful "homosexual" relationship between Achilles and PatroklosI have this small problem though, that in order to stay in the swing of Ancient Greece I need something new to read from time to time. This brings it back to the frustration of the lack of decent books. There's only so much that I can reread the same stuff a bigillion times without losing interest ( ... )

Age of Bronze is definitely the business - Eric Shanower has done a terrific amount of reading up of all the ancient to medieval sources on the Troy story and dug up plenty of stories I'd never heard before. He also supplies a bibliography which helped me find lesser known ancient works such as The Argonautica (two versions), Quintus' "The fall of troy", the various Greek tragedies and Dictys and Dares. None are as good as the Iliad, but they are still useful sources ( ... )

Wow - that's a lot! I can't compete with that, but I am doing a lot more reading, especially non-fiction. I found a couple of new book on Alexander recently which are interesting. The trick is to find ones where the author doesn't let their own personal perspective get in the way of historical fact!

I've also been reading up on the history before Alexander - the Peleponnesian war, the Greek and Persian wars and so on. It really puts the whole Greek / Persian thing in a new perspective - Greeks were constantly seeking sanctuary with the Persian king when their own people turned against them, and of course the Persians sometimes did the same, as when Barsine and her father sought protection from Philip. The whole idea of being a mercenary serving the Persians doesn't seem to carry any stigma, either. But what I found most fascinating was how imperialistic and aggressive "democratic" Athens was, preying on her neighbours. It makes you sympathise with the Spartans!

Anyway, posting something new today - hope you enjoy it!
