"THAT YOU MAY BE STRONGER"
Puck, Puck & Beth, Puck/Quinn
She would be great. She would be the kind of person… people looked up to. That was how he’d figured it at least. Quinn, she was clever and she commanded attention, and him, he had his priorities… some of them. Really, he could only hope she’d take after Quinn.
He’d thought about it, all these months, before and after his role as father was known by all. He’d thought about actually doing it… acting as her father, raising her. He may have been young, but he’d already experienced the role to some degree, with his sister. He vaguely recalled changing diapers when she was a baby. His education on stove usage was built on warming milk bottles. The more he thought about that period, the more he remembered. He would always know how to stop her crying and start her smiling again. It was all so hectic at times, but his family needed him, so he’d soldier on.
Sometimes he thought maybe it had been too much, in the sense that he’d built his defences, so he could be strong for them, but his strength was an illusion. It wasn’t real, not to him.
He didn’t know what Quinn would decide, not definitely. Until he’d flat out asked her, after the birth, it could have gone either way, as far as he knew. She could have decided to give her away, and in the end she had, or she could have decided to keep her. That did make him wonder.
She had moved out of the house, gone to Mercedes in the last few weeks… Would she have returned, with Beth, if she had decided to keep her? They would have probably all gone mad or, worse, turned into a magically unified family form a chick flick or something. He couldn’t have left home; he wouldn’t leave his mother and sister all on their own. Maybe Quinn would have gone home with her; her mother had offered. Would they have shared her then? He didn’t like the idea of Beth only having a part-time dad, but he supposed that was better than nothing.
No, maybe she was better off… a fresh start, with older parents, a house, more money to get her everything she deserved. Then she could take these traits inherited from Quinn and be strong, for real. She wouldn’t have all this baggage right off the bat. Some struggle might be good for character, but he much preferred she got that character somewhere else.
She already looked like she had curiosity; he’d seen that in her eyes. She might take that curiosity and use it to become smart, excited to learn. Sarah had that, and she was doing so well… That could be what his side had given her; it had just skipped him… That was okay. He didn’t see himself needing things like math anyway…
He’d tell himself these things, about how much better her life would be with her adoptive family; it was easier this way. He would try and focus on that; he would not think about the other side, about how it had been Quinn’s decision and he had kept quiet. Deep down still he knew he wanted her in his life, as unexpected as it had been, and that he would feel her absence inside but she’d never leave his heart.
