Gay is the new Black

The citizens of Texas apparently feel so strongly about lettin' the queers marry that they felt it justified an amendment to our state's constitution to prohibit anything even resembling gay marriage. I guess that since it's no longer acceptable to be against interracial marriage, we've got to find another group of people to unjustly hate ( Read more... )

Don't feel too bad. Alaska did that more or less the very minute gay marriage began to be an issue. I was so pissed that I was too young to vote at the time. *sigh*

On the other hand, the AK Supreme Court recently ruled that it was unconstitutional to deny benefits to same-sex partners of state workers, citing that since they had no ability to get married, the state could not refuse them benefits like it does unmarried couples. So at least it's a step in the right direction.

good luck with that - amendments like ours (but that DON'T outlaw common law marriage) are passing like ... flies?...

I am so saddened.

Well, NY already recognizes same-sex marriages performed in MA...and has some of the most comprehensive hate-crimes legislation, anti-discrimination legislation of any state in the country (in regards to homosexuals).

Texas doesn't even have a discrimination statute on the books for gays...so even in the really unlikely event that the NY people passed an amendment regarding same-sex marriage, I still have more protection than in states taht can't even pass a basic discrimination bill...that's really sad.

That's what I told him. However, he also clarified that he didn't mean moving anytime soon, so it's okay. Besides, I'm still optimistic that you'll move with us when the time comes. :)
