It's like that in IT. Many people have the same idea and are working on it and then there are two near results.
it is really frustrating and very difficult to come up with an idea we think is innovative only to find out somone did the idea and delivered earlier.

On the other hand, it might not matter quite so much. In science or IT, you really do have to be the first person to publish, but in the humanities, it doesn't matter because no one really needs what we're writing about anyway. *rimshot* Yes, I really went there. Usually, I tell my students, "hey, maybe somebody else has said it before, but it wasn't you who said it. Whatever you say will be different, because it's you."
I'm used to Shakespeare, who stays stubbornly dead no matter what I do. Werewolves in pop culture are a moving target.
