So I got satellite internet from WildBlue installed on Saturday and so far I can see ups and downs of it. The big up simply being it takes less time to load everything. The down is the price, latency and a cap on both upload and download per month. Second Life is possible with it, but with 1-2 second delays in moving your avatar, and I don't know ( Read more... )

Ugh dude. I could have warned you. Voice chat will NOT be possible. Wildblue sucks so bad. I had it the day after it was released publicly. For the first 6 months it was great. The latency was 635. Anything above that (it will be 2000+ now) is due to their bandwidth throttling and having too many users.

You are within the 30 days. I would seriously reconsider it if I were you and cancel.

Look up EVDO. You can get a decent connection via cell technology with a special antenna and evdo modem in your house and it will cost less than wildblue and have much better latency.

Well it seems to be doing pretty awesome right now, and the cell coverage isn't good enough here for that really.

I agree with equusfur Moose...really pay attention to your 30-day period. You don't want to get locked into a 2-year contract for shitty Internet, especially without a guaranteed job.

But anyways you're welcome for the help. It wasn't a big deal!

I can't say anything about the WildBlue service, since I'm not using it. We're on the Xplornet service in here in the Great White North, and they rent space from HughesNet. No real complaints so far - the service has stayed pretty much stable even in the worst of snowstorms. It will be interesting to see what happens during the summer with rain.

I haven't tried anything like Skype or SL (yet), but there is a lag of a second or two with places like FurryMUCK. Pinging Google, I get a minimum of 661ms, a max of 727ms, and an average of 688ms. So, a little over half a second to beam a signal from my farm into space, bounce it back to earth thousands of miles away, fire that off across the 'net to Google, then reverse the whole thing to get a response back again. When you consider all that, it really boggles the mind. :)

The other issue is cost. Yes, the initial set-up was kinda pricey, around $400 Can$. I pay $79.99 (plus tax) each month for a service that is roughly 30x faster than dial-up. When you consider that a dial-up ( ... )
