Two months....

I'm starting to freak out a little bit about having to change my name. I only have two more months to be an Avenoso! It's too weird, and it's something I never thought that would bother me. It's not an option for me not to change my name, because I don't want to be one of those people whose kids go to school and get asked, why is your last name ( Read more... )

You are not weird! amykrug August 17 2004, 06:33:31 UTC
It is a hard thing to change your name after you have had it for so long. I knew I was always going to change mine and did so shortly after we got back from our honeymoon-mostly because I needed to get my new PA driver's license asap. The rest I did gradually. I always liked having my Irish last name. I am also somewhat German so I guess Krug fits. I just identify more with the Irish side of me! It takes a while to get used to it. I think it helped that I was teaching at the time because the kids started calling me Mrs. Krug right away when we got back from hawaii and when you hear it all day long from many children, it starts to sink in. Now that it has been almost 2 years (I still can't get over that!), I am really used to it and like it. Change your name when you are ready! There will be plenty of time for you to be Mrs. Krahling. the credit cards are the easiest thing to do too. It is going to be hard to not call you jenave though, but Jennifer Krahling sounds good! Just be glad you are not Julia Gulia from the wedding singer ( ... )

changing your name ... broadwayanna August 17 2004, 08:00:31 UTC
Jen, I also consider myself pretty independent and decided years & years ago that I wouldn't change my name. Mentioned it to Kevin in passing before we started dating, and he was like, oh, that's cool.

Cut to us being together for a while and talking about our futures, and I mention it again, and he's like, WHAT? :) We're clearly gonna have some negotiations ahead of us.

My point is, I don't think it's weird to feel strange about changing your name at all. I feel like my name is part of who I am, and getting married wouldn't change who I am. Still not sure how the whole thing will be resolved (assuming, of course, that someday Kevin proposes, and I say yes, etc., etc.).

When Stephen and I were dating he started calling me "Melissa Marolla Brown". I thought it was going to be hard for me because I've always been Melissamarolla (Makin' copies, for some. hehe). But he was very progressive about it and I decided I liked the idea of using both names. I don't like the hyphen though, it's just not necessary :P

I also figured I had better start getting "Brown" on my credit cards, soc, license, etc. so that in the event that we are called in for a permanent residency interview with INS at any point, they will see that I changed my name, further proof that we are in fact married and planning to stay that way.

Do it when you are ready- we'll probably still call you Jenave anyway ;)

Hi Jen,

Before I even got engaged I was always like, "I can't ever change my name. It's my identity!" But then you realize it just makes life a lot easier. In my case, too, Hilke is a lot easier to write, pronounce, and spell than Ascolese.

Credit cards, SS card, and most everything else is pretty easy to change. The biggest hassle (no surprise) is the DMV. That's where I waited the longest.

It will be cool to be announced at your reception for the first time anywhere as Mr. and Mrs. James Krahling. That will be the biggest rush ever! That is just such a great feeling!

By the way we got your lovely invitation today! I will send my yes response in right away!

Good luck with the planning over the next two months! Make sure you take time off from all wedding related things the day before your wedding (besides rehearsal dinner)and get yourself a massage or a manicure!

Love,
Michelle

I would PAY to give it away! oops49eta August 22 2004, 19:43:33 UTC
[sorry I'm posting a week later, post-vacation] i just kinda had to laugh at your post b/c in my sitch, with a last name like Przygocki, the only way I wouldn't change it is if the new name was comparatively worse (but the odds of that are slim/none!). I couldnt PAY someone to take my name!! hahaha so i'm gladly takin offers, hahah
