Grammar question

I haven't  been able to find a good answer to this, and I know there are a few of you out there who use commas in the right places.  Here's the question:
We often (in label textx) write the release date of a game or console. The proposed text for the next exhibit was written:

"December 1982" with no comma looks fine to me, and I was a professional copyeditor for a couple of years!

Latecomer support: Month YYYY without comma vs. Month DD, YYYY
That's what I use, and I'm a translator and copyeditor who goes direct to press without the benefit of another editor's or proofreader's pair of eyes backed by knowledge.

I'd agree with "December 1990" as a reasonable version; one doesn't usually use commas in the middle of compound nouns.

I think this is also one of the things that's a matter of house style rather than grammatical "correctness"; just do this consistently and it'll be fine.
