I like my idea about a rebellion/republic squad sent to parley or investigate one of the sides and being shot down - forced to find shelter & to somehow live while trying to get word back to base that the rest of the squad is down.
Last week we played this game and I got the (mercifully) pre-genned character of the miniature Bat-Man saboteur - I'd play that guy again. I'd play that guy with you - he's fun. I named him Sami'itches.
The idea of being a New Republic agent is a very good one. There are hooks & NPCs that I've developed that haven't showed up in any of this early coverage, obviously, & making an "in" for "your character" was something I kept in mind.
You told me about your dude, it made me wonder if I want to have All Bat Dudes & pair that guy with the Defel Assassin that they have in the Edge of the Empire book. I wonder if people will play aliens, & if so how alien they'll get. I only have one PC's pitch, & they are a human scoundrel. I'm into it.
Don't put character gen on the PCs alone- and if they're uncertain - go ahead and make all the PCs yourself and let them choose from pre-gens.
I myself really like Starwars but It's really hard to settle into one of the characters you can be in that game - I think because they're not all that different? There's a lot of variety - just not mechanically - unless you've got Jedis or force-guys.
It kind of reminds me of L5R - where story-based distinctions are much more substantial than the mechanical ones - and I find that to be kind of crippling - when it comes to deciding what I'll be.
So - my DM made a lot of guys in advance and I was really happy to play the one I got handed - and he was happy because all the PCs he made fit together one way or another.
None of our team is human - we've got a duros, an astromech droid some kind of bug monster as well as a my bat-guy and a wookie.
Hold on-- what is it about character generation that you find arduous? Because I'm...opposed to this, conceptually. That is, my whole campaign is based around the idea of the players creating character concepts that they most want to play, & then me adapting the NPCs, settings, fate & vignettes around that. If you just mean mechanically...then whatever, the math is certainly not something my playstyle ever dwells on.
However, this is precisely what I was planning on doing for off-scenes. That is, I have a handy list of NPC Rivals that I'm planning on presenting to the PCs at a certain interval-- maybe even to start?-- & going "okay, who wants to be the Imperial Captain, who wants to be the K2 Droid, who wants to be the ISB agent...we're doing a quick Villain roundtable meeting on the bridge of the bad guy's Star Destroyer!"
The stuff you talk about...this is what the point of talking to your PCs while they build characters is. We have talked about this before. I like to brainstorm with the PCs, & try to edit/retcon their ideas
