Mar 18, 2008 10:38

I wondered how he was going to handle this. I have never been more impressed with the man than I am this morning.

Yes, and more forthright than I've heard in my lifetime from any other politician.

I understand about never having been proud to call anyone your senator -- mine are John Cornyn and Kay Bailey Hutchison. Obama is something special. More power to the man -- and to all of us.

I read the whole speech. I am also very impressed with him. I've heard many people, like my MIL who swears he's the Antichrist (and we've been hearing about that, too, right?), say that he must believe what the pastor said, since Osama's been there for 20+years.

Then I thought of it this way: I vehemently, absolutely oppose my mother on a lot of her beliefs, mainly teh gays, teh illegals, and teh evil abortion. I am so disappointed when I hear her talk about certain subjects that I hold opposite beliefs on. But - she is my mother, I love her dearly, and I have not disowned her or left her home never to return. We talk about things, we agree to disagree, and we sometimes just avoid the topics. Does the fact that I still go over for dinner mean I condone her opinions? No. It just means I love my mom, she is part of the foundation of who I am.

Go Obama!

That's exactly what I will tell my father if I hear one more word of he must believe what his pastor said . . . . By his logic, I shouldn't even be talking to his Faux News watching self.

Yes, go Obama!

Wow. Thanks for the link. I love that he's willing to tackle this kind of issue, and what brought it to the fore, in its messy, awkward, complicated, and ultimately very human entirety.

The complaints I've heard from my very Republican father involve Obama *not* being black and white, and essentially being human and messy. Personally, I'm all for the acknowledgement that we're human beings. And messy. And awkward. And complicated and brilliant and courageous -- all at once.

What you said. We've had way too many years of being "dumbed down" -- maybe, just maybe, we're ready for a more fully human president, who acknowledges that real life is complex, messy, and in shades of grey, and that people of good will can and do disagree deeply about many things without anyone being "evil" or "inhuman."

We'll see. Perhaps there's hope there.

The song that comes irresistibly to mind for me from reading both of your comments is Live's "Beauty of Gray."

This is not a black and white world
To be alive, I say the colors must swirl
And I believe that maybe today
We will all get to appreciate
The beauty of gray
