Although I'm fascinated by all cetaceans, the sperm whale piques my interest especially. I was taught quite a bit about marine mammals for my stint as a volunteer at Halifax's Museum of Natural History; there I led elementary school children though the exhibits, explaining that 'whalebone' isn't actually bone, passing around examples of scrimshaw ( Read more... )

Wow. I just recently finished reading "Moby Dick", and it greatly increased my awe for whales. Despite the vivid writing, I couldn't perfectly picture the logistics of someone being tossed out of a boat by the flap of a tail... Well, until now...
