I let my Dreamwidth paid account lapse. I felt bad, because I like supporting DW, but it was too expensive for how infrequently I've been using my journaling services lately. I'm on the verge of letting LJ lapse, too, after having a paid account for something like eight years. I know a lot of fandom is sad about technology marching on, but I'm ( Read more... )

Srsly I want to bash NBC's face in. I can't figure out how to watch the Olympics on TV. Watching the Olympics shouldn't be an olympic sport!! Tell me what time stuff is on, show the stuff, and shut up. That's what I want. Or put it on the internet.

You have my sympathies.

Particularly given the way the BBC have absolutely nailed their coverage. I can press the red button on my remote control, and pick any event that is airing and watch it live. Up to 26 live streams at a time. All with commentary. It's, I'm really amazed at what a good job they are doing with it to be honest.

Might be worth picking up some VPN software and seeing if you can spoof your way onto the BBCs internet broadcasting of the games?

It's on the internet, but it requires massive hoop jumping and still doesn't work half the time. If you're determined, I'd take gonzo21's advice below and use expatshield to access the BBC feed.

It's impossible. Completely impossible. It was easier during the Beijing games to get video from the nbc website.

what a farce

i tend to have a thing for female gymnasts from former-soviet-bloc countries - they always seem so graceful and smooth in their routines. which is not to say i don't regularly squeal heavily over the american gymnasts (of both sexes), but there it is...

and if you think catching the gymnastics is hard - you should try catching the horse-riding events! i've basically given up on watching the olympics on tv. they never seem to show what i want to see anyway. horses are another area where you really need to see the whole competition, not just bits and pieces here and there. worse, they'll do things like show just a few jumps on the eventing course. *head-desks* really? idjits.

Russian and Romanian ladies' gymnasts are beautiful to watch, and most North American gymnasts just aren't graceful and balletic in the same way. It's a reasonable preference to have.

Are you able to access the equestrian coverage online or on mobile? I bet it's a million times less frustrating. Only showing portions of an eventing course? That's ridiculous.

i was thinking about this as i read it, and i don't think it's a preference for one style of gymnastics over the other so much as an *appreciation* of both styles. for me it's like appreciating both the tympani and the kettle drums - both styles speak to different parts of me, and i love that. :)

regarding the horse events, i don't have a mobile phone contract capable of supporting high-data content - that's by choice. i use my mobile phone strictly as a phone. but i think i should be able to access some kind of online coverage. i haven't googled hard for it just yet, but i know i've seen clips on youtube - the hard part with youtube being that it's almost impossible for me to figure out the correct order that the horses went in. i need to check more into it this weekend, see if i can't find some kind of comprehensive online coverage. if nothing else, i should be able to find some equestrian sites with good pointers...

What's your tumblr name? I feel like a lot of this switching over happened while I was busy living in two countries/getting ready to live in two countries, so I missed some.

I'm moscarific on Tumblr. I enjoy being followed.

Tumblr and my ADHD are BFFs, and my entire shiny new fandom (Teen Wolf) is over there. Therefore, I have defected to Tumblr for the most part.

The coverage would really be killing me if I were all that invested in the summer Olympics. I have an instinctive need to rebel any time I am supposed to root for a team or individual in any sport based on geography. My favorite teams tend to be out of state and more often than not my favorite athletes are not American. Watching the women's gymnastics coverage makes me want any team other than America win simply because the commentary takes bias to a new level. Every time they say Jordan Weiber is the most tragic figure in Olympic history I scream Joannie Rochette at them.

I work evenings, so I want to watch things live! I've missed almost all of the gymnastics so far, and it is making me sad. Can you point me in the direction of some instructions on how to do the workaround? I am so not tech-savvy it's not even funny. /o\
