Haiti and cell phone donating

The internet the last couple days has been awash with messages on Facebook, Twitter, LiveJournal and other places stating "Text HAITI to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross." Shadow73 handles our cell phone bill. Therefore I donated to my preferred charity, Doctors Without Borders, directly using my own credit card. I didn't want any confusion.

Yea, the idea of some well-meaning kid texting multiple times and his/her parents finding this one their cell phone bill....*shudder*

My biggest problem with it is that it takes forever for the donation to actually get to the charity. The 5 million that has been donated is not showing up until after the billing cycle and everyone pays their bill. I think most people are under the impression that they are giving money right now.

As far as the company, this is the same one that American Idol and Alicia Keys were promoting last season. It's pretty up and up and I don't think the admin fees are much more than most other charities.
