People used to tell me that I'd "calm down" or otherwise end up softening my republican position, back when I was 18 or so and listening to The Queen Is Dead. That I'd grow out of it, like acne. But it hasn't happened. If anything, my anti-monarchical position has only got stronger as time has passed ( Read more... )

I sort of agree, but surely the House of Lords is a better target. It actually has direct influence over what happens.

And is it really true that only a few things disgust you more than the Queen's speech?

In this context, yes.

As for the House of Lords, I can definitely see a need for reform (there are peers in there who are ONLY there because they have held religious office - on what POSSIBLE grounds does that qualify them to deal with legislation?) but I can see a valid argument for its continued existence and it doesn't anger me so much, symbolically. Besides which, I don't know as much about the history and setup and functions of the HoL.
