The “Radio” that I am referring to in this entry title is the movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr. However, the “Movie Star” I am referring to is not Cuba Gooding Jr. but Ed Harris who doesn’t belong in such a laughably bad movie. I finally got to watch Radio last night with Shaun and our good friend Wayne who’s home for reading week. First we ( Read more... )

Is Erin's marathon going to include The Other Sister and I Am Sam? Ugh. Mentally retarded people are all so different; why do moviemakers insist on making them all the same and lame to boot? It's embarrassing. Law and Order had an episode about a retarded girl once played by the redhead from Six Feet Under. It was good and she was good and I wasn't embarrassed for her.

Yeah, I think the first film that Katie mentioned was The Other Sister, which she's obsessed with. I Am Sam is also on the bill.

Oh gawd! That sounds terrible! Why was Ed Harris in such a bad movie? I don't think I could watch it, even if I went into it expecting it to be funny. I still haven't brought myself to watch "The Other Sister," I, I... I just can't. I HATE it when "normal" actors portray the mentally challenged, however, two notable exceptions that I actually find to be excellent films: "Rainman" and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape." Any takers?

It's true, there are notable exceptions and I agree with the those that you've mentioned. I hate it when the actors think that they're being brave and delivering a powerful performance just because they're playing someone who's handicapped. I think Elisabeth Shue took the role of an autistic woman in "Molly" because she assumed she'd automatically get another chance at an Oscar, which thankfully she didn't.

The fact that she was in Hollow Man should preclude her ever getting nominated for anything again.

It also seems to be considered oscar worthy when beautiful actors sacrifice their good looks... this, however, is far more tolerable than the mentally challenged thing.
