that movie looks SO GOOD. how's the violence against women factor though, on a 1 to 5? kind of kills it for me, being you know, a chick and everything. sometimes the awesomeness of a good samurai flick compensates.. annnnnnnd sometimes it doesn't.

I put it at.....3.5-to-4? Actual events not shown, but aftermaths are.

MILD SPOILERS AHEAD

There's an implied rape (not shown, but woman is knocked down and then dragged off-screen) and one....just monstrous scene of the aftermath of a mutilation (woman shown missing arms and legs and tongue, naked, crying and screaming. No gore, as the event is long in the past and wounds are healed, but they just show what resulted from the acts of a character). It's easily the most affecting moment in the entire film, I'm afraid. But that's how they chose to establish that the villain in this movie is basically Japanese Caligula. It's obviously horrific. So, yeah, 1-5...hard to say. 3.5-to-4? It's not like you're forced to watch anything terrible happen, but terrible things happen/ed. Both of those events are in the first 20 minutes, though, so you have 1 2/3 hours of samurais doing samurai things to rinse that image out.

i can deal with that i think. i think the older samurai films can be a little more disturbing. i remember in one a seemingly random scene of a 15 year old being raped by some village men. kind of drawn out. had a temper tantrum over it! ha ha ha anyway thanks for your review :)

1. It was good. A little salty, but that'll happen when the ingredients involve soy sauce and sesame oil. But, I like both of those things, as well as garlic and green onions, which were in it as well. I can't help but thinking it was too strong. But, I followed the recipe, so I don't think that was my fault. I enjoyed it enough, but I'm a philistine. Haha ( ... )
