I love this shot. Do you mind if I ask you to explain it technically? I saw that you were using a reflector - did you use fill flash too? (kind of looks like it from how light the grass is in front). Also, did the sun flare just come out that way, or did you have a certain filter on your lens? I love that it came out as really clean crescents. Awesome work.
Thanks. I basically just had one strobe running on a battery pack right above my head (I was sitting on the ground), and the strobe had a white shoot through umbrella attached. I don't think I used any reflectors in this shot. I just had the strobe turned all the way up so I could darken my overall exposure and make the background show up more. I don't know the whatts per second or whatever that my strobe was set on because I'm not that technical with lighting equipment but it was an alien bees B400 flash unit at full power (which isn't that powerful) if that means anything to you.
And the lens flare was pure chance. I was shooting right into the sun so I knew I'd get some lens flare but for some reason my new lens (Nikkor 24-85mm f2.8-4) creates that really circular looking flare which I don't normally get with other lenses. I did have a uv protector filter on that lens which is supposed to cut down on the atmosphere a little but I have one of those on all my lenses so I think it has to be the lens itself. I hope that helps.
Sweet. Thanks so much! How do you like the Alien Bees lights? Those are on my list of equipment I'll buy when I'm less broke. ;) The light on her face still looks warm, like reflected sunlight.
I thought the lens flare looked like a wide angle but I've never gotten one that clean before... very cool.
