Thanks for that link! I'm a bit embarassed to admit that I only recently discovered the Bros. Quay (while attending a concert/art show at a Lansing gallery last year). I was *totally* amazed at what I saw, which was portions of "Le Institut Benjamani" and one or two of their animated short films. I have a few of their films on my Amazon.com 'wish list', but I think it would be cheaper for me to rent the flicks if I can find a place 'round here that has them.
Liberty Street here in Ann Arbor has a compilation of several of their shorts, and Institute - have you tried Thomas Video in Clarkston? They have darn-near everything.
I luuuv the Brothers Quay! I first saw one of their feature length films in 1988. It was so long, and boring and dirty. Something about something on Crocodile Street. I loved it!
Oh, no, I'm a nerd. I own all of the brothers Quay stuff along with Jan Svankmajer's (my favorite Svankmajer films are Faust and Alice). I even have the Institute Benjamenta's soundtrack.
I am a fan of 16 Horsepower as well! My friend Jon who is friends with them and used to be the drummer in a band called Slim Cessnas Autoclub told me about them. I saw them open up fro Nick Cave and have been under their spell ever since. Have you heard David Eugene Edwards' solo album Woven Hand yet? There is a new one just recently released Blush Music, it is just as filled with dark and swampy tales, campfire stumps and lugubrious dirge folk crawls as the first. Ok, now I really am a nerd
Good for you! I'll post something re: a couple books that have essays on them in your community this weekend, since I'm guessing the other kids can pick up the film end better'n me.
