i've read a few people say that DH read like a fanfic.

i even made the comment at how much fic writers had gotten right.

so i meant it as a compliment to the talented fic writers who called things correctly and did a fair go at jkr's style. NOT as a snide criticism of the book.

her writing isn't 'high art'. but i don't think it's ever claimed to be. ( Read more... )

I agree with you whole heartedly
in fact I'll take it a step further and say she's an excellent writer in that she wrote this huge 7 novel epic that has a zillion minor characters, tons of plot points and side plots and created a "universe" yet it still reads fast and easy. While she makes some pretty big statements about human nature, to be honest, I don't think most of them are too preachy or hitting you over the head. Even some of the best fanfic (novel length) are far more overwritten, often difficult to read and pale in comparison to JKRs novels. I love fanfic but I'll say it right here and let people throw rotten tomatoes...It isn't that caliber. Probably 99% of it- If it were original fiction it still would not be either publishable or widely read and accepted. (steps down from podium;)

Word. I've seen those comments as well, and they left me cold. I had a few nitpicks here and there, but had so much more laughter, tears and cheers. I thought Jo grew so much over the course of the books, and I give her all the credit in the world for it.

yeah. i have my quibbles. but i think this is HER book and the only thing she had to do was write her book.

I dont think the book was really ficcy at all. I think a lot of fic writers did quite well and got a lot of things right, and maybe thats where its coming from. The only thing I do think was very fanficcy was the epilogue - especially with the names and OBHWF and all that. Just my opinion anyway.

I never felt like I was reading a fanfic...it'd been such a time since I'd read the actual canon that it took a bit to re-adapt to JKR's style, which is purely her own, and not at all a problem ( ... )
