ET and me.

So, at the end of this week, I'm eligible to look for a new phone (sneaky 18 month rather than 12 month contract, you see) - but now I'm currently wondering what to go for ( Read more... )

I've a shiny new G1, and I like it a lot. Great if you want access to the web on the move or you run your life off of google. The poor camera and battery life are the biggest downsides.

My old k800i was ok, decent camera but not particularly great as a music player, but the later versions may have improved the software. Give Jo a poke, she's probably played around with several of the Sony phones so can give you a more educated opinion.

The G1 is just too much for me - it's something I don't need, I think. Plus, it's on it's own tariff, so off the cards.

I am enjoying my Samsung G600. It looks good, has an awesome camera, (competetive with the standalone cameras, apparently) and is a Which? best buy. I can't comment on the music player I'm afraid, since I don't use it that way. Oh - I guess it's got limited memory space (something like 50MB onboard with a potential 2GB on the Micro-SD expansion slot) so you couldn't carry your whole music collection iPod-style.

Hmm. It does seem to have a lot of plus points, and Sandra really likes it. She doesn't really go into the music playback side in her review, save to bemoan proprietary headphones, which is a shame.

I didn't know her so well and haven't spoken to her for over 2 years, so I'd feel a bit weird speaking to her out of the blue and badgering her about a review.

Ah, well, although the data connector is still the only socket on the thing, instead of proprietary headphones it came with a normal set and an adaptor. That may be a new development since the review.

It's the fact there's a need for a bulky adaptor that fits uncomfortably in a pocket / risks being pulled out when walking that puts me off.

Me: iPhone. The migration to O2 was a nightmare, but I'm very happy now. I loved my iPod touch, and having web & email truly mobile is great. Having to use iTunes is annoying, but I mostly listen to podcasts on the move anyway, and it's fab now that they can be downloaded directly to the device. (It does help that I have WiFi at home and work). The 3G has a standard headphone socket, as well as the standard iPod connector ( ... )

I borrowed the C902 from work and liked it, and other people who'd borrowed it did too. I recommended it to Arwel's brother and he got one, and I don't think he's had any problems with it. Most phones in the world have poor user comments so it's hard to tell unless you actually know someone with one. If I were getting one now and money wasn't a problem I'd get the C905 because it's the best 8MP phone out there at the moment.

I have one of those bluetooth things that look like an mp3 pod on a string, that could be an alternative to having the headset plugged in. You can have a look at it at the weekend if you want.

Yeah, I very much like the look of the C905, but I think that's going to be a "you can upgrade to this phone if you pay 200 quid" option.

Which is a shame, since the C905 looks like it would be a keeper.

I recently "upgraded" to a Nokia N95 8Gb for the Wifi connectivity and general smart-arsedness of it. It is a colossal pile of shite. The music player is actually pretty good, but the rest is a slow-reacting mobile design flaw with bugs that make it almost unusable (the main "function" button just goes into spasms of firing randomly, which does context-sensitive things at inopportune moments). Right now I have reverted to my old KRZR which does the jobs I need very well.

I will not be purchasing another Nokia.

On the other hand, I hate text and the quality of phone cameras so I suspect our purchasing criteria differ, though I doubt even then that yours include "unusable".

I'm told the N96 is "the N95 after a year of beta testing", but even still I'm veering away from the high-end Nokia multi-function doo-dads.

I am generally a fan of Nokias, and currently have an N73.

BUT.

It has a known 'bug', which means that occasionally it throws its toys out of the pram, and the microphone stops working - meaning that if you call someone they can't hear you. it also *sometimes* (but less so) happens if someone calls you. This is a known bug, and Nokia are seemingly doing sweet FA about it. I am told that the entire N series have similar problems.

I may be persuaded away from my next Nokia at my next up grade because of this.

Also - Ed has an N95, so it might be worth asking him his opinion of it?

With the availability of the N96, I'd never be getting an N95, so it's moot.
