That kind of cruelty just blows my mind. You'd think Brian's parents would make him invite Robert; when I tried to not invite a classmate to my seventh birthday party I got in trouble.
I remember something like this happening when my daughter was about 4. It was terribly heart wrenching, particularly since some of the parents were bragging about the party.
Robert is a wonderful person, and you are a good parent.
There is some real pain and wisdom here, from both you and your son. The "everyone's invited but you" party is so low. Living well is supposed to be its own reward, but living with a big heart is better.

1. Your son is immensely caring and kind. That's a wonderful thing.
2. Those slights may not be forgotten, but they definitely shouldn't be wounds that won't heal.
3. You never know what might be useful in life. That's why it's best not to throw people away.
