Does the coulis add a lot to the enjoyment of this cake or do you think the cake can also stand alone?

oh, you can certainly do this without the coulis - it's a very moist cake. Plain, or with ice cream or whipped cream would be awesome.

Thanks! I have no blending/processing tools right now and I think the coulis would be too complicated to macgyver. But I do have some pomegranate chocolate ice cream that it may pair nicely with...hmmm...

You could also do a strawberry sauce, using fresh strawberries. It wouldn't have to be pureed or strained because the seeds are much less offensive. I'm not sure how it would work with the chilis, but it would be delish without it!

Does he like carrot cake? There's an awesome carrot cake recipe in this book - it has a white chocolate cream cheese icing. I made it for my mom's birthday a few weeks ago, and it was a big hit. I can send you the recipe, if you'd like.
