FLASHBACK
Around 20 years ago…
“Jaejoong! Jaejoong!”
Little Jaejoong heard his mother calling him, but he’s not coming out from his hiding place. In fact, he crouched even lower so that his mother can’t see him. Sometimes, he just thankful that his house is just THAT big, so that he can hide in places no one will find.
“Aish, that kid, I will beat him once I found him!” he heard his mother cussing, “Jaejoong, you naughty kid! Where are you? Mr. Park already here for your piano lesson!”
“I hate Mr. Park,” Little Jaejoong mumbled, “He always said I’m stupid,”
Jaejoong remembered how he had little mistakes while playing Chopin song last week and Mr. Park told his mother that he is untalented, unlike Mi Na, his sister.
After hearing that and sure that Mr. Park already leave, his mother pulled his ear and dragged him to the piano room and told him to practice for 5 hours nonstop.
He knows that if he skips his piano lesson like this, his mother will be angry.
But not as angry when she founds out, Jaejoong had not mastered the new song while Mi Na can played it with her eyes closed.

Jaejoong never understand why his mother always compares him with Mi Na. They’re siblings right? So why should he won over her in every way?
“You had to get good grades in this math test, understand Jaejoong?” his mother told him while he munched his bread with stern voice. “I don’t want another 71, got it?”
Jaejoong can only nod his head, while he looked at his bread. He can feel eyes of the other’s table occupant on him. Actually, he is not that sure, he had studied until midnight, but he just don’t understand math like Mi Na. He had thought to sneak into her room and asked her to teach him, but he will be dead if his mom found out.

“Jaejoong! Jaejoong! Where are you?” he heard Mi Na’s worried voice outside.
Oh how he wants to answer her. But he can’t. He just can’t.
The school already over and it’s time to head home together with Mi Na, but Jaejoong’s just too scared to do that.
He took a paper from his bag and saw the number marked with red ink.
He got 53 for his math test, and he’s really afraid of his mother’s reaction. So, he can’t go back home. He didn’t want to head home.
He sniffled as he looks at the 53, wishing for it to chance miraculously. But it didn’t.
He sniffled again.
“There you are,”
Jaejoong looked up and from his blurry visions, he saw Mi Na looking at him with concerned eyes.
“Why are you here? This is men’s restroom, unnie,” Jaejoong said while rubbing his eyes.
Mi Na just crouched near his little brother, “Why are you hiding here?”
“I don’t want to go home,”
“Why?”
“I got 53 for my math test, umma will be angry,”
“I will help you talk to her. Now, get up, we have to go home,” she said kindly as she helped her brother to stand up.

They say that he and Mi Na didn’t look alike at all. They said that Jaejoong looks a lot like his mother, big doe eyes, white skin and black straight hair. While Mi Na’s eyes are small like his father and she had curly hair. Jaejoong always wonder how can she get curly hair. Appa and umma got straight hair. Grandpa and Grandma also got straight hair.
However, he never thinks or asked that. Because even though Mi Na had curly hair, he still loves him as she is.
“Where is my daughter?” Jaejoong can hear his father’s voice from the piano room where he practiced.
“Appa!” Mi Na yelled and launched herself into his father.
Jaejoong can only watch from a far. He can never hug his appa like that.
“You said you’ll be away for 3 weeks, but you have gone for 2 months,” Mi Na said while pouting.
“Hahaha, my princess shouldn’t be sad anymore. Since appa is home now, and Appa brings you a gift!”
“Really, what is that?”
His father showed her a doll so beautiful to his daughter.
“I bought this in London. I remember you instantly once I saw its curly hair,”
“Thank you so much, appa! I like this very much,” Mi Na took the doll.
His father smiled and carries her in his arms.
“Appa, I’m a big girl already, you shouldn’t carry me like this!”
Jaejoong can only watch the scene. He didn’t know why, but he just can’t bring himself near them. As if he’s scared to ruin a moment.
Suddenly, he can feel present beside him; he looked up and saw his mother frowning at the scene displayed in front of her.
“Welcome home,” she said in a cold tone.
His father smiles disappeared instantly after he hears that. He looks at his wife.
“Your son had been watching you since minutes ago, why you didn’t say something to him?”
As if he just realized that Jaejoong had been there all along, which Jaejoong guess he is.
He said instantly, “Ah, mianhe, Joongie. I had some chocolate for you, but I keep it in my bag. I will get it for you later okay?”
Jaejoong smiled and nodded.
After that, his father went to the backyard with Mi Na still in his arms.
Jaejoong however, was instantly pinched by his mother, “Why can’t you do things like that? Can’t you welcome him home? And why you only nodded or shook your head near your father? He will think that you’re mute!”
His mother forces him to look at her in the eyes, “Can’t you get his attention? Huh?” Receiving no answer, she decided to release him and walk away.
His mother walked away and from his spot, Jaejoong can hear,
“Why did God give me a useless son?”
Or something likes that.
***
Why should I compete with Mi Na to win appa’s attention? To win Grandma and Grandpa’s love? Shouldn’t they be fair and give me and Mi Na the same amount?
“Umma!” Jaejoong run inside his house, looking for his mother. It’s a rare occurrence, thinking how many times his mother is the one searching for him.
“Dong Yun-shi!” Jaejoong called as he saw that ajusshi watering plants.
“Yes, young master Jaejoong,” he answered politely.
“Did you see my umma?”
“Hm, I think she is at the kitchen, cooking for your father,”
“Okay, thank you!” Jaejoong runs to the kitchen but he bumped into someone along the way and he heard something crashed not long after that.
Oh-oh
“Jaejoong! Why are you running like that?” he heard his grandmother shrill at him, “Look, what you’ve done!”
He looks at the floor and saw pieces of glass lying there.
He looks back at his grandmother and say, “I’m sorry, grandma, I’m sorry,”
“That is an expensive vase I just received from China! How can you say you’re sorry! Your sorry won’t glue that vase back!”
Jaejoong winced at the tone his grandma use and also because of the look he received.
“Umma, what’s wrong?” Jaejoong can hear his mother’s voice.
“Yoon Ji looks at what your son did to my vase?”
“He- didn’t break it, did he?”
“He sure did! I just received that vase today! Me and my husband looking forward to display it too! You have to explain this to him,”
“I’m sorry Umma, I’m sure Jaejoong didn’t mean it,”
“Whatever,” that old lady decided to leave the scene.
Once his grandma disappeared from their sight, Jaejoong look at his mother hesitantly and sure it did come.
SLAP
His mother had just slapped his face.
“Not only you can’t get my husband to love me, now you get my mother in law hate me too?!”
“You useless son! You’re stupid and have no talent at all! You’re a boy but look so girly, that’s why your father didn’t even like you!”
She said all this, while hitting Jaejoong.
“I had a child in order for Ji Sub to like me! So he will like me! So he won’t look for that whore anymore! So, this marriage can last!”
She slapped Jaejoong once again. Right now, Jaejoong had started to cry.
“Umma, stop,” Jaejoong pleads.
“But you, his son, can’t even compete against that whore’s daughter! How can he love us now, huh? I think he didn’t even REALIZE he had a son here!!”
“It hurts Umma, please stop,” Jaejoong plead again.
Realizing what she had done, Yoon Ji stopped immediately. But she didn’t look regret it at all, more like, she kind of scared someone might she her out of control like that.
She decided to leave the scene.
“Umma, I…” Jaejoong managed between his sobs.
“Shut up! And clean that damn vase!” She said while didn’t look back at her son at all.
I got 100 in my math test today, umma.
Jaejoong said silently.
