Not that much. This bed in particular is pretty protected as it is a soft-sided waterbed and has thick foam around eveywhere but the top, and the top has a very tough thick wool 'underlay' between the bladder and the sheets etc. I've had this one for about 8 years with no problems so far.
The only time I've had waterbeds leak has been through human error - either in putting it up in the first place, or something sharp of ours getting down between the timber frame and the bladder - but now I don't have a timberframed bed that's not so much an issue and after owning waterbeds for twenty-five years I pretty much know how they should be put up...:)
Mind you, having bragged like that so nicely now, you DO know that this one shall now leak, don't you?....LOL
Incidentally, when they leak, it's not like in the movies - they don't spray everywhere, it's just a slow seep which usually stays within the plastic liner they come with for just that reason...:)

Though, the dark shawl over the bedside table is gorgeous, and makes me want to dress up in something exotic, preferrably Arabian.
