Lazywebs: Sewing “issues"

My Singer sewing machine, Betty, is getting more and more temperamental the older she gets. Since I estimate she’s in her mid 30’s, I think that's reasonable. She has “issues” with light weight fabrics, and has recently started the really fun game of unthreading her bobbin every few centimetres. I think the spring in the bobbin case has sprung.

Nick Ciancio in Barkly St Footscray has repaired our swing machines. He is an ex-Olympic boxer, which strikes one as tolerably bizarre; but Mme has had no complaints....

I have a Janome - my second.

I love them. I also have a Janome overlocker... "they" say go with what you know though - so see how they feel to you when you have a try-out.

Mine came from these guys http://www.sewingmachines.com.au/ (though from a store they no longer have in Clayton). They were good - good prices too.

HTH.

Oh - and my mother has a 70s husqvarna - it's a pain in the arse, and even more so when it needs to be serviced. I don't know about the new ones though.

I second that. Our old husqvarna is being very difficult and resistant to service attempts. We only paid $20 for it 10 years ago so can't really complain.

I have a bernina which I adore. They are exxy though and I haven't seen the modern ones recently. Mine is over 16yrs old. I hear good things about Elnas. I think that is what splodgenoodles and 10b bought recently. I had a sew on it and I'd be happy to work with it. I have used a repair person north of Essendon but I might have to check out bar_barra's suggestion next time.
