It would be wrong to suggest stew and slippers, wouldn't it...just kidding ;)

The reality is that many animals in shelters are euthanised because there isn't space for them. All shelters have to prioritise those animals with the best chance of rehoming and any that have serious health or behaviour issues are the first to go. Feral animals are usually done as a matter of course. Just how it is and will continue to be as long as people continue to preference "new" animals over adopting, don't get their pets desexed early and don't commit to caring for the animal for it's entire life.

And even though I was jesting above, if they do have to euthanise some of them it would be a shame to see good meat and fur go to waste. Or do bunny people find that creepy?

I don't think that the pet rabbit breeds make for good eating.
Personally I'd be happy to wear the furs of euthanised rabbits -imagine the pretty fur-lined sideless surcoats I could make.

Interesting question: did it occur to you to have Hudson's pelt preserved for slippers/coat/other useful item?

The CPD contemplated it, but Hudson was that sick and his coat wasn't in very good condition. Also dog fur isn't as nice as bunny fur :P I've heard dog meat is quite passable, but again, not from a sick animal. Neither of us are into keeping memorial type things of pets like getting them taxidermied, keeping ashes, grave etc.. so we just let the vet deal with the remains ( ... )

Sadly a one bedroom flat with a cat as a housemate would not make a happy bunny or I might well be tempted.
