in praise of rain

Nov 15, 2006 14:55

I think there's a reason religions baptize people. There's something inherently ecstatic about being soaked to the skin. I know some people like the warm rain, but not me. It's too much like being slobbered upon by the world's biggest dog or something. I like the chill fall rains, rains I'd characterise as 'brisk' rather than icy. Invigorating. ( Read more... )

I prefer the warm rains because I chill too easily, I mean right to the bone. I hide under protective gear because moiture makes me go frizzy. I hate the rain because I live in Seattle and we go too many days without sun, which makes my mood go all flooey.

But despite all that, I do love rain. I love the sound of it hitting a rooftop and the windows, curling up with a good book and letting the sound soothe me. I like playing in it when I know I don't have to be anywhere anytime soon.
I love the twilight gloaming of an early morning rainstorm, looking at the city's lights cutting through the haze.

I have a real love-hate relationship with rain, I guess.

Yes, I think I wasn't properly taking into consideration those of you who get cold so easily. You can feel sorry for me in the summer, when I'm lying about with a headache complaining of glare!

We're just polar opposites in that regard, huh?

I've been out there in it today too-- my take on letting the rain take advantage of me is that it keeps me humble; all this hubris, whether it's religion-fueled 'god created man' crap, or the scientific 'top of the food chain' grumble, goes to hell in a handbasket when you have a pretty good downpour.

Or a volcanic eruption. Or an earthquake. Or, on a much calmer tone, a spectacular cloud formation. All of which we take no responsibliity for.

Yes, after being washed I feel more alive, maybe exhausted, but connected, you know?

I do know.

Is there a good night this week for going out and getting a drink somewhere? Maybe after Becca gets off for gay Paris?

Um, how about Friday night? So you can tell me the sad and sordid tale of Victor...

Friday I am previously engaged for girls-night trashy vampire movies. Saturday night when you get off? Or Sunday night? Oooh, we could hit Sambar Sunday night, maybe?

I am currently soaked, having gone for a walk with my head held high and no hat nor umbrella in sight. I love feeling the cold rain run down my face, and people must think I'm mad because I always have a little smile on my face, because, secretly, I know something all those umbrella-bearers don't: it's so much better to choose to get wet.

I am in complete agreement with you, and you voiced my feelings on this matter perfectly. I am a consummate fountain-jumper, head-first diver into the ocean, puddle-stomper, shunner of umbrellas and waterproofing. I'm a child of the sky and the sea. Autumn is best when taken in with all the senses.

Rant away about summer - I totally agree. What is worse than being too hot when it's too bright everywhere?

Next summer I'm going to treat myself to a parasol. I've wanted one for so long.
