Is "Salads" cheating?

I don't think so! It was the only way my brothers and I would eat salads, since we had, let's say, competing preferences.

Yay!

We had a "Sammiches" night, too.

As a kid, I did this with burritos (not sure it's sufficiently different from tacos) and salads. And, I guess, burgers on the grill with elaborate burger fixins, but that's even less work than tacos/burritos. I still remember it being fun, though.

Most foods of that genre (burritos, quesadillas) can be filled with basically anything.

Although they're more work (because they require post-picking cooking), you can also do this with stir fry or pasta dishes, letting people pick their own veggies/tofu/meats/sauce.

Indian food is also kind of set up this way: the same "base" is used for most curries, so you can make it into masala sauce or korma sauce or whatnot reasonably trivially, and put it over chicken or beef or chickpeas or whatnot. (Although I don't yet have it, I've been told that this book has the clearest and best dish on that.)

Do ice cream sundaes count? :)

for breakfast we do "yogurt granola fruit bar" sometimes. highly popular, even now that its "soy yogurt".

we also used to do fondue or other sort of dipping things... thats kinda DIY.

We do omelettes for dinner around here - grating the cheese, chopping/picking the other fillings, and beating the eggs are participatory.
