You nailed it! I completely agree with your sentiments, and think it's all a bit ridiculous...maybe it's fun for the kids, who get to go "hunting for christmas lights" with their grandfathers?!? I did witness this wonderful moment and it does make the heart melt!
benchly makes a great point with the photography stuff--i am more than annoyed when family members bust the camera out to take pictures of "moments" that feel all-too-weird when i know they're about to be preserved on film.
i have to say, though--here in CT we usually see a quite modest display of christmas lights on homes. when we drove to rural PA this year, i was pleased to see people going "all out" with festivity. some houses were tacky, but most were overdone just right. for some reason it seems as though wealthier neighborhoods around here do almost nothing to decorate, while more modest neighborhoods take more care to deck.
my number one pet peeve about the holidays is similar to some of yours--everyone puts so much pressure on "the big day" to be a certain kind of experience, that they are devastated or at best somewhat gloomy when it does not happen exactly how they had hoped.
