Something I've started trying out is Inbox Zero, a method of keeping your email inbox completely empty by using the power of a service like GMail to archive and search through old messages. Can you set up FB to send you an email whenever there's a wall comment/activity? That way the email sitting in your inbox is the marker for the open loop...

Oh, and with regards to a lot of email/mailing lists, I set up gmail filters to label and archive them. Then I can see the little label indicator showing X new email in the label, and I read them at leisure, without compromising the empty inbox.
